Well with the purchase progressing i did some research today on berthing prices, both marina berths and dry stacks.

Have to say i was pretty surprised at the price disparity between sites and particularly between companies.

for example,

Dry Stack in the Southampton region for an 8.1 meter boat. £ 3300 inclusive of vat and unlimited launch and recovery.

Dry Stack in Lymington for 8.1 meter boat. £4860 inclusive of VAT and unlimited launch and recover.

or

Marina berth for 8.1 meter boat

Hamble. £5120.

Southampton £4020

Lymington £5000

Obviously there are benefits and disadvantages to all sites and some offer more in terms of additional benefits that others but for the marina berth particularly, The cheapest also offered the most "Value added" benefits.

Still not sure where we will keep it as typically, what we want isn't available at any price!

Marinas do seem to get a bad rep in customer service but in all cases, i e mailed first (from their websites) and received full replies within 2 hours . In some cases, a call back to make sure i had received and ask if i had any questions.

decisions decisions!!

Is keeping on trailer an option? are there any park and launch sites that could be suitable?

yea kinda,

i know from past experience that launch and recover puts me off boating because i am basically lazy!

we might look to do that over winter months but want it easy access during the summer for evening runs out.

The obvious choice is to sell the boat Howard = no berthing decision to make ;)

Is this not just a simple case of supply and demand?

Upper Hamble above the low road bridge ~ £375 / m / pa

That's ~ £3,000 for 8m plus no restrictive contract, just a months notice (Foulkes) and your off. Eastlands & Cabin I expect will be similar.

I have a 40' (12m) flybridge and my only restriction is top of a +4.8m tide, or very low lows, and not too many of them each year. 3 mins from M27 Jn 8. Some good pubs in walking distance. If I return and the tide is a bit high I just have to wait on the Jolly Sailor pontoon for an hour or so - isn't life tough !

good thinking... oh hang on... that reminds me of someone else!:p

no disputing that. i was surprised at the difference in price in a relatively small geographic area. i worded my post carefully to avoid saying who was cheaper than who and making me sound like an advert (which i am not!)

obviously the more expensive marinas feel they have something better to offer or berth holders justify the extra cost in their own way as marinas are equally full across the region.

A Haslar marina berth comes in at just under 4k and an introduction by a berth holder gets you (and them) another £500 off.

didn't look that far east as too far for us to travel to the boat. that looks to be on par with southampton prices.

yup, above the bridge offers significant hamble river savings for sure!

Zippy, do you live within 7 miles of Lymington Church? If you do you can apply for a river mooring, and will get an offer of one upriver of the train bridge straight away. In a RIB with no A-frame you'd have access under the bridge at most states of the tide, and you can also then apply for a temporary mooring below the bridge for the summer if you want. The cost is a fraction of that of a marina or dry stack.

You remember my mooring spot?

There's a chap with a rib in the dry stack, he uses it almost everyday, so they have got into the habit of leaving it in the water, they leave it in the corner next door but one, it occasionally gets lifted for a jet wash, seems like a great combo to me.

Undoubtedly, having a small boat to bash about the Solent needs to be walk ashore if you want to get the most from it.

So much to do. Visit stranded car carriers, play dodge the boat, put the covers up, turn on the heating, walks in the rain, swim in cold murky water.

Not sure the wife and kids would find it their idea of a holiday!

Nick, we do live within the 7 mile limit and will call them tomorrow to see what the score is, would really like a walk ashore as I know I'm basically last and cants be bothered with the faf of a tender and all that, I know it's bad but I'm just being honest / realistic.

Ben, that would be great set up but as we live the other side of southampton water now hamble just doesn't work for us, would be a pain to get around to the boat. Ideal would be dry stack at Hythe but can't see that getting past the residents association there!

Looking forward to having an outboard boat where I can kick the engine up and not worry abouts outdrives rotting away!

Fingers crossed in the next few weeks we will be back in the boat owning club again.

I thought the waiting list had been shortened drastically for the local authority walk ashore moorings at Lymington (by close scrutiny of boat ownership details etc) I put my name down last year for my 12 metre boat. Very nice chaps smiled and said around 15 to 20 years should see me near the top of the list !

Blimey! Guess there's an element of who you know...

From what I've seen and heard they play it straight. There is high demand and long waiting lists for the downriver moorings and especially for the walk ashore pontoons. There is far less demand for the upriver moorings, because of course they're no good for anything with a mast, and quite restrictive even for a mobo with a cabin.

I was given a sub-let just opposite the town quay last summer, which was a 2 minute row from the quay, and didn't seem a hassle at all to go out for an hour or two in the evening.
