I currently keep my boat in Scotland and I'm thinking (maybe dreaming ) of moving it to the sun next season my berthing costs here are just under £5000 for the year if I can have the boat in the sun for the same or cheaper this might be an option I fancy Portugal or Spain has anyone got any tips or recommendations

The trouble is that Atlantic weather is similar all down the coast, it's just that the rain gets warmer the farther South you go.

France provides the most comfortable berthing - look at laRochelle, les Minimes is the largest marina in Europe and there are lots of other places around - the cheapest being Marans up the Sevre-Niortaise, but you have 18nm of river and canal to lock in and out so not good for day sails. When I was there I was paying £25/month for my berth (but then France adopted the €). Cheap UK flights by Easyjet and Ryanair. Services superior to the UK S Coast.

If you go farther S you run into the cost of access outweighing the saving in berthing fees. That there will be a saving is indubitable - I pay €1300 for my annual berthing in a marina, including lift/launch, for a 10m boat. That's in Greece.

Where's that Charles...? Is there a queue? We will be heading further east next year and it's never too early to be thinking about wintering!

Spain Sant carles marina MDL very nice 3500 uk pounds per anum for 12m berth electricity and water included pm me for details

I pay about 4500 euros per year for an annual contract for 52ft LOD/ 67ft LOA in the South of France.

+1 If you look at the berth brokerage sites, it may be possible to get hold of a privately owned berth for a lower rate than MDL charge (quite a number of vacant berth when we were there last winter).

Also worth looking at is Badalona, northern outskirts of Barcelona. About the same price as Sant Carles but not as nice - post industrial area - but close to the airport at Barca with train access from the airport to the marina.

It looks like this thread has been superseded with one on the broader issue of moving to live in the sun?

Unlike the UK, where the norm is an annual contract, including water but not electricity, other areas have differing policies on variable length contracts (low, off season & high, in season) with unlimited electricity & water included. Additionally, some countries may, or may not, have a number of boat related taxes.

Thus a direct comparison of mooring dues may not provide an accurate picture so the other broader post could give a better idea of costs.

For the South of France, for annual berths, usually electricity and water are included. This is also sometimes, but not always the case in Spain.

For both France and Spain there are no boat related taxes due for non residents who keep the boat on a UK registration (SSR or Part I).

Do not become resident in Spain without having worked through the consequences first!

Reducing costs of mooring is only part of the equation. Broadly speaking mooring costs are higher in popular areas with high demand and lower in less popular areas. The popularity may be because of location, access, cruising area and level of facilities. So Majorca is higher than say, Sant Carles in just the same way as Solent marinas are more expensive than Hull or Fleetwood.

You need to decide what sort of sailing you want to do and then look at the cost of the alternatives - not just the mooring costs, but travel costs and convenience to get the balance that suits you.

My fully flexible 12 month contract at Leros covers whatever choice I wish between ashore and afloat, includes lift and launch but not electricity, water or pressure washing. Cost is €2300 per annum, 10.6 metres. It would be cheaper if I elected to remain afloat all year but I would then have to pay for lift out and back for maintenance. The drawback is that Leros is not the easiest island to get to, either fly charter to Kos, then ferry, or UK to Athens then Olympic to the island.

You say "in the sun". Is that winter sun as well as summer sun? If so, remember that a lot of the Med is not that warm in winter - you need southern Spain or the Algarve for that.

hi john

as I have said before, Alicante is close to airport, shops, bars ect are there, sun shine most of the year ect, what you need to think is what you are planning to do, retiring there or holidays ects. Alicante prices from record are for a 12m berth is about 4600 euro per year.
hope this my help

paul

I recently stopped in Alicante and found the marina very crowded, hot and expensive! Torrevieja marina had space, but the town is very busy in season.
I've moved on to Cartagena which seems reasonably priced and a very pleasant uncrowded town. Ragusa and Licata in Sicily are the current bargains.

Thanks I quite fancy torejveca /alicanti area it would mostly be for holidays with me being the only one who likes sailing the rest of the family would just be using it as a holiday home

Hi john

if you try alicante you would also be close to benidorm which has a lot of night life with shows and bars plus during the day time there are aqualand water park for the kids, and the theme park this would only take about 20 mins driving.

Alicante has much more nightlife than Benidorm and it's only a short walk from the marina. It's proper Spanish nightlife though, whereas Benidorm is aimed at tourists (Alicante old town after midnight is like a mini version of Bilbao, the suburb in Madrid where the best clubs are)

We are in torreveija and really like it! Berth is very reasonable price and lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance. A regular airport coach transfer service from alicante for only 7 euros per person.
