I'm researching taking my V40 to Majorca and currently UK berth cost is about £7.5k per year but my first quote from Cala D'or is over £10k which includes the upfront payment discount.
Is this likely to be the norm to see much higher costs in the med or is Majorca an expensive destination?

Cala D'Or is lovely and my clear #1 choice on the island but because of its niceness it gets a premium price above most other Majorca marinas. CD'Or, Andraitx and Portals are expensive and the others are mebbe 30% (very approximately) cheaper. Rest of Med is similar: hotspots are Cala D'Or style pricing and other spots around 30% cheaper.

Interesting, so the others are more like uk pricing then? I ask because I keep thinking about such a move, although I think I would buy there rather than take my boat out there

Thats highly debatable! Its a long way from the airport, dead as a very dead dodo in the winter and when the easterly wind blows, you're stuck in harbour. Much better to be berthed in Palma at Club de Mar or Club Nautico. 10mins taxi ride from airport and a very attractive city on your doorstep for the evenings plus sheltered cruising in the bay. If I had a choice it would either be Club de Mar in Palma or Andraitx which is nicer than Cala d'Or IMHO and only about 30mins from the airport

Definitely debatable and I should have said "imho" :D. In my book Cala D'Or aint far from airport with new road (DougH will confirm, but 30mins?) and is waaay nicer than Club de mar. Palma old town is lovely but you can keep the port - bit industrial with a scum of oil on the water. If you want to be able to have an easy low mileage weekend then after you've plodded out past Palma's ships there's nowhere to go if you turn left and only a few places if you turn right. Just imho though!

I found the med a lot cheaper, based on boat size, mine is a sealine s28 and my boat is being shrink wrapped as i type, and is loaded onto a lorry Monday, bound for Alicanti, mooring £500 cheaper plus includes electric, water etc. Chose Alicanti as my swmo does not like driving, Alicanti airport 15 minute bus ride to the marina. Med here we come.

OK have to agree to disagree there but I know where I'd rather be for a long term berth:)

After a week sailing out of Palma I agree about the port and the scummy water and not such a nice place to keep a boat and at that time I hadn't thought about relocating to this area.
OTOH Cala D'or was lovely in comparison hence it sparked an interest in going Med based. As usual you have to pay a premium for the better quality marina's much like in the UK.
Are there other locations within a reasonable distance of the airport that are in as nice a location as Cala D'or with comparable amenities?

Yup as I said, Andraitx. Also Santa Ponsa, Porto Adriano and Portals worth a look although the latter is a bit blingy and full of Germans for my taste. The scummy water in Palma always collects at the eastern end of the harbour for reasons I never understood. Its much cleaner at the western end where Club de Mar is

As a club de mar "resident" - right at the back of the marina - I can honestly say I have never seen scummy water. I can see the bottom of the marina looking down from my bathing platform.

Santa Ponza - nice but expensive, no pool, no availability (visited the other day with a friend with a V42 and asked)

Andraitx - nice, has pool - I would imagine expensive not sure. We asked there about availability and they said no.

Adriano - hideous place in my view - Mr Stark should stick to designing taps.

Portals - security is poor as the whole marina is open. Twice the price of Club De Mar, lots of restaurants.

Bear in mind that where you leave the boat is immaterial as you will leave quite quickly no?

Club De Mar gives us club, infinity pool, free kids club form 9 - 6 daily (important to us), no swell at all ( we are at the back of the marina so this would not always be the case), excellent security, 10 mins from the airport and park (if you have a hire car) at the back of the boat.

The downside is the ferries can be noisy ( the cruise liners are totally silent) and it is does not score 10.10 on the picturesque front. The club part does, but the marina part less so.

Re places to go this is subjective. 15 mins sees you in Portals Vells, less than that for the bay of Magaluf ( forget the town the bay is nice) and Portals ( several nice beaches). For me using the boat is kind of the objective

Cala D'Or is nice, but the club is private and costs E40 per person per day in season or annual membership, the water is pretty scummy at the back and that was last week on pontoon L and smelt of **** when I started the engines. The club is really very lovely. There are lots of places to go if you turn left or right and only want to travel for 10 mins. It will require you (economically) to hire a car and is probably the thick end of an hour to get there.

My friend is of the picturesque school of thought and has just taken an annual berth for his V42 in Porto Cristo. Nice place, but it is an hour + from the airport. Not for me but we are all different.

This is all about what you want. To me Club De Mar is excellent. It is close to the airport, well equipped, secure and reasonably priced and the town is "open" all year. It is "pretty". Not really, but again down to personal choice having the rent a car and drive an hour having already travelled for 1:45 on a plane is a no no.

I have always kept boats out of the UK and the single biggest criteria ( for me personally) is proximity to the airport.

I have PMd you so if you want to talk about this please call.

Have you thought about having your own car at the airport. we use park and fly at palma airport and travel to the north of the island (alcudia bay) is only 40mins. I can be onboard within 1h of picking the bags up.

Also Cala d'Or is not secure in the way that Club de Mar is. Anyone can walk around Cala d'Or marina and try to gain access to a boat. Not saying it's an issue but it would be a factor in my thoughts.
Btw we were in Andraitx last week and they had berth availability according to the broker we talked to although not sure in what sizes

We have thought about owning a car there, but in one way other another it would need to be taxed, MOT, insured, maintained etc ( or the spanish equiv). Logically we would leave the car at the marina, so still incur a E15 cab fare!

The alternative is Avis which is cheap cheap. Normally £100 per week and if you book and say you live in the USA is is still only £250 in peak season for 2 weeks.

We could buy half of yours (we have kids so school hols dominate!

Mike, it is time for you to accept that Cala d'Or is not the place for you just like Club de Mar is not for me. I love Palma to visit as a City but I cannot stand the marinas there.

The east coast of Mallorca has the finest boating areas in the Med and Cala d'Or is ideally placed, which does mean that the berth prices are not cheap.

I guess that a few appear think Cala D'or is one of the better marina's, some think otherwise. Seems to me to be a compromise between reasonable distance from the airport, access to great cruising grounds like the North East but in itself a really nice marina to be based.
Thanks for the input folks, helps to make my decision much easier to make..

Oh s**t I'm going to disagree again. Look its not that I dislike Cala d'Or, in fact far from it, I always enjoyed visiting there by boat, but the OP is talking about the best place for a long term berth and IMHO more prosaic factors like proximity to the airport, security and how to amuse kids on non boating days come into play. Sorry I agree that the east coast of Majorca is a fine cruising area but actually I preferred cruising the spectacular NW coast and IMHO Ibiza is also a jewel of a cruising area too. When you've 'done' Majorca, you should try Croatia. A very different cruising area but in some ways even better than the Balearics. All IMHO of course

Currently reading this post in Alcudia
We have always liked Pollensa but after a couple of weeks in Alcudiamar, I think we prefer Alcudia to Polensa
The port town is a bit like "Blackpool in the sun" but the actual marina area has a kind of "quaintness" about it
Also, there is a new motorway from Palma which makes the north of the island only 40mins from Palma airport

Have friends out with us this week and we have found some nice bays to anchor

But if you are worried about costs, why not do as we do.
Berth on the mainland where costs are far less and pop over to the islands when you fancy.
It is only the same distance as (say) Hamble to St Peter Port
Sant Carles on mainland Spain can be half the costs of UK berthing.

don't forget Saturday is market day in alcudia old town ! that's an experience :) how long you sating on the island for ? I'm back out at the end of next week.

Thanks - didn't know that
Bit overcast today so staying in port
Maybe we will check it out - for the ladies anyway!
Went up to the old town last week so we know where it is

We have this berth booked for the whole of June - please pop in if you are passing
