Berth renewal just arrived

When we got back from our travels, we said to Fambridge that we would like to resume our annual mooring.

Very happy when we get a new anual contract a couple of days later dated 13 August with a new start date of 1 August.

Danyal offers a prompt payment discount when taking out a annual contract if you pay by 1 May. Obviously as he sent us a letter on 13 August, he sent out a letter after the normal time for prompt payment discount.,
As we were taking an annual contract we assumed that we would qualify for prompt payment discount if we paid straight away and gave him a cheque tqking account of the prompt payment discount.

However, Danyal is saying that because he offered us an annual contract after 1 May, that he won't allow us to qualify for prompt payment discount. Obviously this will occur again next year.

Not best pleased.. I have asked him to refund the money from 1 April to 1 August.. No says he, we must pay the extra £61.00

Does you berth then run from 1st Aug to 31st July? It seems a bit odd that there will be any number of berth holders renewing their berths throughout the year and only those who happen to renew at April get the early settlement discount, it must be an accounting nightmare.

I may be wrong but would he not have offered an annual contract at a pro rata of this year's rate to cover you until the normal renewal date of April, then you would get the normal early settlement discount option next year.

It would be interesting to see the terms & conditions there.

Yes to contract runs 1 August for 12 months... I don't see why I don't count for prompt payment discount unless .i take a contract at the begining of the financial year?

Perhaps other members of the Parish have similar experience?

Mine runs April to April as it happens although I tend to pay by instalments because despite my best intentions to save up over the year in order to pay up front an get the discount I always spend the damn money on other things!

I suspect I too would be a tads peeved in your shoes!

I agree, my point was though, that if you are offered an annual berth Aug to Aug and then continuing on those renewal dates, I can't imagine you're the only one to be out of sync with their advertised April to April year, therefore causing them grief in their accounting dept.

I also agree with your early settlement discount entitlement. If you're entering an annual contract and are willing to settle early and they have not given you the option to renew in April then it does seem a little unfair.

Get a 0% on purchases credit card, pay mooring, and set up DD to pay off card. Needs care as if you miss a payment or go over the term then penaltys outweigh gains.

Appalling. I would be off like a shot. A swiz.

It seems to me that the biggest swiz is marinas who run their annual contract from 1 Jan - 31 Dec. Who is going to time their arrival/departure at that time of the year?

Fine if you intend establishing there for several years but, in the meantime the marina will happily charge the daily/weekly/monthly rate if you arrive in June and want to leave the following June.

You are still there for a year - but not the year which suits them.

Burnham have sent out a flier to the effect that if you pay now for a 1st April renewal then you can move there straight away for no charge until 1st April on the basis that you have already paid at your existing berth. Obviously very keen to suck people in and feeling the pinch.

Same at Shotley. Also if you arrive at Shotley mid year, you pay pro rata yearly rate up to 31 Dec, then start new annual contract from then. Other contract lengths are available.

I will believe they are keen when i see the renewal rates... They were up last year... And the place has been half empty all season... I will not be happy if they put them up again.. The new parking lot doesn't really turn my crank.

Yes, won't be long now before they arrive. Early payment discount would be good too.

As a matter of interest a swinging mooring at Pin Mill and haul out winter storage and relaunch is around £146 per meter.

I only lay up there but they offer a good service. Other yards charge for winter storage on a timed basis, and if you go over the set period - 3 months or whatever - they start charging extra. King's don't do that.

Everything is negotiable. So far, I've only come across one marina not willing to negotiate terms.
So, I moved. Which wasn't that much hardship as another marina had just made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

I tried with Lowestoft Haven Marina. Wanted to bring the boat in September and start the annual contract on 1 Jan. No deal. This in spite of me having kept the boat there for two years a few years ago.

It just seems like an incredibly stupid business model to me. Why lose annual contract income for the sake of a few quid sacrificed by giving a pro-rata quote?

We have had a Kings mooring this year and just laid up with them. Everything went smoothly and really happy with the service. A mooring for next year has been requested already. Making our way to the mooring by tender hasn't really been too much of an issue. By comparison a marina Beth is much more convenient etc so not really comparative, but there aren't may p,aces on the river for us to stay afloat at LW springs, we did this year. The hard at Pin Mill is also being improved so things will continually get better re acces.

It's a lovely place to moor as well isn't it & very friendly at Kings. We are considering going somewhere like that in a few years but until the little one is at least five I can't see it. The tidal access is a pain at Granary but it's a darn nice place, no where else on the Deben for the winter will do.
