Hi Guys,

A friend of mine is looking at a 1989 Beneteau Oceanis 390, she looks in very good nic and has a good range of kit on board, the owner is asking 59K, what do these boats usualy go for and are there any common faults on the Beneteaus to look out for?

Cheers Cliff.

Sounds like about the going rate, depends highly on equipment levels. ( I'm biased )

Any Beneteau is a production boat built to a budget. My 390 is an 86 and I bought her cheap ex charter and then 2nd owner. I've spent a lot on her since then. Had her 5 years and love her to bits. Stingo of this parish took a 390 a long way round the world and the boat has completed circumnav I believe. Very beamy so lots of deck space. As supplied did not have loops in plumbing to prevent flowback. Leaving a seacock open WILL JUST allow the head to overflow and could flood the boat. Number 1 job is to make sure that problem is addressed.

Headlinings will collapse unless they have already. Same as with any other boat. If she has a Perkins 4-108 in it'll last 6000 hours or more. Look out for leaky Vetus hatches. Mine are driving me nuts, needing attention every season! The skylight and wrap around sidelights in the saloon will cost a pretty penny if replaced through Benne. if they need attention ( scratched, craded etc ) then its best to address it through independent means. Also when it's really sunny cover the saloon skylight for an almost instant 10 degree drop in temperature. In the winter though the skylight makes it nice and warm below.

Rig and spars are oversized for strength and moderate in area. Quick off the wind, not a boat for pounding to weather in a hurry. Does well on a Kiwi prop. Cockpit 'teak' is veneer faced ply, won't last much longer than its current 21 years before it needs replacing. It's held in place with 20 million screws, each of which penetrates the skin and is a potential leak. I stripped all of it and replaced with a simulated teak.

Some equipment such as the Goiot furling drum and swivel is not replaceable but can be refurbished. Spars are Isomat.

If your friend buys I'd be happy to get in touch to share experiences.
