Beneteau Leroy Somer Windlass

Hi, Looking for advice/guidance/previous experience. Have a Leroy Somer Windlass on my yacht. Happily turns, in and out, when switched on, but as soon as it is under load, IE actually trying to pull in the anchor chain just clicks, and within seconds, throws the relay and shuts down. Any thoughts....???

Sometimes the clutch can come loose on a windlass - don't know if that would cause the shutdown though

When you say "just clicks" , where is the clicking coming from, the windlass or the relays?

When you say "throws the relay" what exactly happens to the relay? Or do you mean the circuit breaker?

I had a similar issue with the Beneteau fiited Leroy and found that the brushes in the motor were worn and springs holding them in place needed replaced. Temporary fix was a rubber mallet on casing to get brushes to move but ultimately I removed motor and had brushes replaced. Now works like new.

Hi hard to tell where from, somewhere within/under the windlass. there is a circuit breaker switch within the cabin, that switched off.

Ok, so assuming your box with the relays in is in the cabin, as mine is, and not under the windlass then its not the relays clicking. Therefore suspect mechanical problem that is putting the electric motor under excessive strain that causes circuit breaker to trip. Sorry if this is obvious but I have a simple brain! Have you had a close look at the gypsy while you activate the up switch (look before the cb trips), has the chain stripper bent causing the chain to bind under the gypsy? What has changed since the winch was last used successfully?

You have to dismantle the whole windlass to get the motor out, it is a bit of a fiddle but not difficult. I toke motor to local electrical repair shop.
