Hi,

I recently purchased a Beneteau Antares 710 which from specification cruises at approx 16 knots and has a maximum speed of approx 21 knots. I’ve never really had it up to these figures, probably around the 6 to 10 knot range, some days can be windy and running against tide, plus 4 people out back fishing. The stern seems to dig in and i’m never really up on a plane. Could I benefit from Bennet trim tabs? I’m sure I squeeze another 2 or 3 knots of power without flogging the engine. The hull is semi-displacement, bronze prop at 7 degree angle from coupling.

Hello Harry, can't help specifically but I have a Antares 760, same power to weight ratio, same design of semi displacement hull by the same designer and very similar speed specifications. The 760 also digs the stern in with a bow-up attitude. I have trim tabs and they make no diference to the speed. If anything, they reduce the speed a bit if you try to level the bow down. Occasionally useful for lateral trim but if they were to go wrong I would not replace them.

I don’t have a 710 either but do have a semi-d hulled boat. It sits now up until about 16 knots at 3000rpm. If I go to 3200 rpm and 18/19 knots it levels out a bit but not enough to encourage me to go faster more often. I don’t think trim tabs would help either. It’s just to style of ride for the boat.
 
Like Plum I have a 760. Are you saying you can’t get more than 10knots at wot? If so what revs are you getting at 10kn? I have tabs on mine, useful for dropping the nose a bit and lateral trim but they’re not going to add 8-10 knots. Hull and prop clean? Have you given it full throttle, if so what happened? My turbo doesn’t really kick in until 2500rpm.

Thanks for the reply folks. I probably have it around 1800 to 2000 rpm, getting around 10 knots, calm day no wind or tide! Probably not getting more than 10 knots, I'll have to check throttle cable for adjustment. If I was to go up to 2500 rpm or above it would start to blow black smoke.
As regards the outlay for tabs against performance increase couldn't justify spending probably a grand plus installation. I contacted Bennet trim tabs and sent picture of stern, they outlined placement of tabs as shown in photo (coloured red) they said M120 batwing tabs wouldn't be suitable, dual actuators required as outlined in photo as exhaust port in the way of mounting location.

'M120’s would NOT be the choice for your vessel, since you need as much trim tab surface area as you can get to have any effect over your running attitude at 10 kts (at 6 kts we don’t expect the trim tabs to have ANY EFFECT over your running attitude at all).
Do you have any transom photos you can email to us, so we can see how much room you have to working with for this installation?'

I'll forward Bennet a few dimensions, length etc and see the price they come back with!

As far as I know it is a sign it's not burning the stuff - diesel. I'm not really up on engines, but should I hear the turbo kick in at certain rpm?

It’s supplying more fuel than it has air to burn. Different engine but I get a decent kick in the pants from 2500-2800 rpm when the turbo comes in.
 
Update! removed exhaust elbow very clogged, its hard to even see how the water exits it! turbo out side - turbine blocked with a fair degree of rust and carbon buildup. I was able to remove all the rust and gunge, careful not to touch the blades. The turbine now turns freely with no play or signs of wear, blades in tack. I used a small dremel tool with extension arm to get in between the turbine blades and clean any remaining rust and carbon buildup. Just waiting on a few new gaskets to replace old ones, also replace 4" exhaust hose with new clips to elbow. The new exhaust elbow is 316 stainless which should last a fair bit longer with no corrosion.

Should be a difference in day and night with this working. March next year before I get it into the water and try..
