just wondering does anyone own or have knowledge of these boats i was just wondering is the difference that big to justify in money terms any feedback would be greatly apporeciated...

Have been snooping around 9.80's and 10.80's myself as well as the likes of Jeaneau's 32 (and 36, but too dear new) and Rodman's 1040 and 940. Ihmo the Beneteau's will do the job but are clearly built to a price and are not a match for quality against the other two builders. But heck, there's shed loads of 9.80's and 10.80's out there so clearly Beneteau have hit plenty of the right buttons. Look at the weight of the boats compared to their loa's and you'll see why Rodman and Jeanneau are dearer - there's more beef in them hulls. If and when I do change I think my money's probably on a Rodman (new or used) as I value the safety of wide side-decks and stout guardrails, robustness of build, and supposed good seakeeping although I have to confess I'm only an armchair critic as I've been to sea in neither of the boats mentioned. Dealers won't entertain a test ride until they've got the number of your Swiss bank account, your house keys, and the key's to your daughters chastity belt.

Happy shopping.

I have just bought a 2004 Antares 9.80 and am totally delighted with it. Have spent the last 2 years really looking at boats to buy (as opposed to the dreaming for the years before that!). Spent a lot of time on the 9.80 before buying and had several spins in them. Didnt get out in a 10.80 but having seen both side by side in a dealers, it was really a non brainer for me.

The 9.80 (and I know i may be biased considering the fact i have just bought one) is by far the better value boat.

Reasons for choosing the 9.80:-

1. cheaper and better value

2. better looking (although i accept this is v subjective);

3. more glass (linked to 2 above) - it has huge saloon windows and despite ony having ports below decks, it is surprisingly bright in the heads, main cabin and guest cabin;

4. the 10.80 has tiny saloon windows which are very high when seated (and dont give you a very good view out which is important for us);

5. lighter and cheaper to run;

6. better flybridge than 10.80 - you can easily sit 5 up top- on the 10.80, i think that would be a real squeeze

All in all it is a great boat. I think the main reason to choose the 10.80 is a larger guest cabin, twins instead of bunks. but the bunks in the 9.80 are genuine adult berths and v v comfy.

I dont have any great experience of the Rodmans and although they are said to be much better built, i didnt see that when viewing the A9.80 and the Rodman 940 and 1040 (think they are the models) at LIBS in Jan this year. The quality of finish inside is not noticeably better than the Antares in my view. I understand that the hulls and mouldings are much stronger in the Rodmans. That doesnt make the Antares deficient, it just means the Rodman is perhaps a more solid boat. But so far, i have been very impressed with the Antares as have all the owners i spoke to when researching my purchase.

If you check out youtube in about a week, i should have uploaded some videos of our delivery trip from the Menai Strait to the Isle of Man. Search "Satsuma" and "980". As for the Swellies (see forum thread on the Menai today) - they were memorable and quite hairy!

Happy shopping.

Tom

I agree with what You say Tom.
The 9 is better than the MF range ref the sidedecks.
Easier to negotiate imho.
Dunno why but I like the 'ride' in the 9 ref the Rodman.

Hey, look forward to the Swellies piccies!

Wanna come back?
Save yer having a lift out.
I,ll wiss Her through, low water Springs!
Nice shiney bum and prop afterwards. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Hey up! where are You berthed in IOM?

Would second everything Tommie says.

10.80 slightly bigger and heavier with double second cabin, but otherwise the 9.80 is such an easy boat to live with. Everything just seems to 'work' in terms of layout. Handling wise, I've always felt safe and comfortable in mine. On a crossing from Weymouth to Cherbourg last summer in a fairly lumpy beam sea (MBM cruise), many peeps with bigger boats commented on the way ours looked on the water. They said it just looked 'assured' and 'well balanced'.

Only possible adverse comment is that the flybridge. although excellent in layout (probably best in class), is a little high for the size of boat. In a big squaddie wake this can play mind games with you as you roll like a bath duck. However, if you hold on tight and remember just how much of the boats weight is below the waterline it's OK.

ty Tommy for your response iam looking forward to seeing your boat on youtube if you have any pics in the meantime they would also be good to see i was also wondering could you tell me if the steps are difficult to climb to reach the flybridge as i had an accident a few years ago which makes climbing quite difficult also was wondering were you bought your boat or who you found to be the best dealers as far as second hand beneteau's were as i'm from northern ireland, look forward to seeing your boat and the best of luck with it

Hi Valentino. Can't recommend Dickies in Brighton highly enough. Fantastic service and very friendly. They do quite a lot of business with Ireland. The Bangor office really concentrate on the big saily boat stuff, so Brighton tend to do most of the power boats, especially in the 7 - 12 metre range.

I have quite a few good pics of our 9.80 under way if you'd like me to send you some.

Re- STEPS DIFFICULT TO CLIMB?

Just collected my 70 year old Dad from Airport tonight. He did the delivery trip back from Menai to the Isle of Man earlier this month. His view is that steps are wide and safe, with lots of useful handholds, although you do need to take care and take your time.

My view is that provided you ake your time, watch out for banging your nose in front or your back as you go up in a heavy sea, you'll be fine. The opening to the flybridge is large enough to fit through comfortably, but small enough to wedge yourself against the back of the opening in a heavy sea for extra stability.

RE - WHICH DEALER/BROKER

I bought from Dickies in Southampton (brokerage boat) and they really did go beyond the call of duty. Nigel and Trevor were simply wonderful. I worried about being in the Isle of Man and relying upon the seller's broker (which is of course what they are) sorting out things for me.

They helped arrange transport up to Dickies in Bangor where i had the boat serviced and launched. Martin at Dickies in Bangor couldnt do enough for me either.

All in all Dickies (Southampton and Bangor) were first rate.

I would also recommend John Dunphy at BJ Marine (Dublin and Bangor Northern Ireland - I note you are from the North). I was hoping to buy from BJ Marine but they simply couldnt get their hands on a used 980 in time for me to buy and enjoy this season. John got me out in a customer's boat for sea trial and did his best to do a deal for me but with no used boats around, i had to look further afield.

RE MENAI TO ISLE OF MAN TRIP
Check out youtube now - search "980" and "Menai" and "Satsuma". It's the first time i have uploaded - do any forumites have any tips - it looks like youtube has squashed the video of my beloved boat to make her look short and squat! Believe me the boat looks nothing like that in the mpeg that I uploaded. Very strange.

KAWASAKI - it was a good job it was high tide when we were coming through. went down with a big RIB with Yachtmaster and Lifeboat man onboard and we all did our prep on the Swellies. Still it was a relief to get through with both props intact! Might take you up on the instant antifouling along the seabed offer sometime! keep the boat in Douglas inner harbour - up against Harbour wall as no free pontoons - dead man's shoes. harbour boys are great though and got me a decent spot with shore power. Shout if you are ever coming over this way.

All the best with the searching Valentino.

Just stuck 'Satsuma 980' into the Y Tube mix.
