would love this boat but house move upsizing means it is now out of budget.

What equivalent in the next size down.

Budget £17k, draft less than 1.5m for sallow harbours, younger than 1990.

Is this impossible?

thanks for the recommendation but would rather use my budget to buy s new as possible to minimise refit/maintenance issues as I have already found out from last boat.

I had one for several years. The lifting keel was useful though strange seeing sea water under the table! And tons of cabin space.

But not great upwind - the single rudder seemed to lose its bite when heeled. Good downwind our top speed was 12kn.

What's the score with the back stay, seems like there is a funny metal bar that splits the stay. Where the back stay connects to the transom, there appear to be fins of GRP sticking out horizontally, with the standing rigging passing through these and connecting to the aft end of the hull? Reason?

Yes, Im not sure - I guess maybe their design for attaching the backstay as far aft as possible to maximise geometric efficiency and cockpit space.

seen that but seems very stripped out for cruising,

my budget is 20 - 25k and I dont want anything from the 80's as they are getting on for 30-40 years old and I dont want the maintenance costs so looking mid 90's and later.

Jeanneau 29.2 should be doable but dont like the winch arrangment. Beneteau it seems to be a 27.7 or a 310, but most 310s are too deep draught.

Bavaria 32 shallow draught ideal but too expensive.

did you ever carry an outboard? and if so, how did you get on with the minimalist pushpit rails?

Ok, I assumed you were looking for a cruiser/racer wth an asymmetric kite.

If you're after a cruiser, there are lots of options, but you can get a Bav32 for sub-30k, which is probably your best bet.
