What does the panel believe to be the only bend to be used for life saving?

You can't have the Hangman's Noose, it may save a life by taking one, but you can't have it!!

And can some explain the use, the only use for a 'thief knot'

[/ QUOTE ] Theif Knot - looks like a reef knot to the uninitiated. The idea is that you tie your kit up with a thief knot, and you know if someone has been at your belongings by checking the knot on your return. The thief normally ties a reef knot when replacing things 'as they were found' and you spot the difference.

I think a lot of people round here know that.

As to the other question, I've used a double sheet bend in a climbing rope and it has saved my life but I suspect you've got some clever definition of knots, bends and hitches in mind.

If you're into the differences between knots, bends, hitches can you explain why the Fisherman's Knot and the Fisherman's Bend are so named?

[/ QUOTE ]

Fisherman's knot joins two ropes. Bend joins rope to something else like an anchor.
