Bending SS tube

Gordon.

I have a pipe bender and have successfully bent 15mm ss tubing for parts of a pushpit. I used a much bigger bender for the 1" pipe which I had to borrow.

I wouldn't consider using a spring.

I have some 15mm stainless and can get 22mm fairly quickly.

Do you have the old parts for a pattern? or does it have to be done on board?
Why not come over here and I will bend the stainless to match.
It will only cost you the price on the tubing. I stay quite near Dunfermline, not too far from Ayrshire.
I will also be going to Irvine in the spring.

PM me if you want to go down this route.

Cheers

Iain

Okay, pipes.....
you can of course get CP copper tube, not meant for a marine invorment, butttt...
how much you wanna spend??

both 15 & 22 Chrome plated copper can be easily bent in a hand bender, if you want to borrow, your local plumber will have one. You CAN bend SS tube in a hand bender but as UncleAlbert says you have to get the correct thickness & the correct OD.

Give it a go!!

25mm 316 s/s tube in 7metre lengths @ about £26.50 per length from Anglia Stainless in deepest suffolk. By the way using Hydraulic pipe bender for Pushpit, Transom arch, Granny Bars and grab handles...Manual bening is a pain in the butt on 25mm....unless you are built like a brick outhouse"!

Was that /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif ?

Agree olives are sometimes loose and sometime tight, but all still nominally 15mm or 22mm I/D.

It's the old imperial stuff that's becoming a pain if you can't use a compression.

Vic (occaisonal plumber....something I'm still allowed to do).

As both a boatowner and a Plumbing Lecturer I can assure you that cetainly as far as Metric copper tube is concerned it is always measured by it's Outside Diam which remains constant regardless of wall thickness differences.
It is true that coiled soft copper as used with LPG is still measured by nominal imperial diameters although the tolerances usually permit the use of Metric compression fittings as per used in Microbore installations.
I would not reccomend the use of a plumbers handbender on Stainless Steel for sprayhood frames. You really require a hydraulic bender with guide and former to properly fit the OD of the tube being bent to avoid rippling or kinking of the bend.
Best of luck.

Thanks to all.

Some good thoughts here... thanks.
Interestingly after my post the latest copy of PBO dropped on the doormat with a feature on stainless working, 'though with nothing on bending.
I'll pass on one tip from a motorbike restorer I took this up with. He suggested using heat-shrink tube on the original (cleaned) ali frame. He buys two meter lengths for looms.

Re: Thanks to all.

HEAT SHRINK TUBE Now that`s a good Idea

er what sizes and or colors does it come in, in what lengths and whats the price and availability.

please no answers
only kidding
