One of my first trips out this year due to pressures of work and I happen to pick the start of Cowes week...

So, Cowes is booked. Yarmouth is booked. But Bembridge appears to be an option and the tides seem friendly

I've never been to Bembridge, advice on activities, places to eat. Will be entertaining my 16 year olds and my 10 year old daughter.

Suggestions much appreciated!

I like Bembridge. It's a longish stroll from Duver round to the other side. Water taxi or dinghy well worthwhile.

reccomend floating cafe/restuarant top of fishermans pontoon---opposite marina---everything from crab sandwich and coffee to shellfish platter and wine

Cowes not necessarily ruled out - people are saying elsewhere on here that the Folly still tends to be free - you could then water taxi down? Not to be missed in Cowes week - a real buzz....

The harbour website is quite good, gives you depth over the bar, pilotage and local information: http://www.bembridgeharbour.co.uk/ Call up on 80 as you go in past the breakwater at the harbour mouth and they will ask your length, draught and planned departure time. They will then instruct you where to moor, they group similar boats together taking departure times into account.

There is the Baywatch restaurant/cafe on the Duver which you will see as you come in. Basically you can walk up to St Helens where there is a pub, a restaurant and a convenience store or it's over to Bembridge (water taxi or longish walk round the harbour) where there are a couple of pubs, a couple of restaurants, a Co op and a few more local shops...

Plus 1 for bay watch but beware it does get booked up so if you are planning to visit in evening an early booking is advised. If the BHYC local yacht club and neither St Helens or Bembridge eateries attract then you could try Seaview which is short taxi ride from St Helens Duver and has a number of places of varying price . In terms of activities little in locality for junior crew unless they want to ice skate at Ryde . Historical tastes catered for at Osborne House or at Carisbrooke Castle but a longer distance away. The other marina down from the Folly is Island Harbour which might have space and be worth a look if tides are suitable. You can walk from there to Folly to catch a water taxi up to Cowes I believe if it still runs .

Opposite Dan's Kitchen on the other side of St Helen's village green is Gander's Restaurant. We have been using it for years and have never been disappointed. The village shop seems to have closed.

From my thread last year.

Dinner in the Baywatch Cafe on the Duver - its a 5 min walk across the sand dunes from the Duver Marina. Just walk along the beach towards Ryde and you'll find it. Openign times vary.

Walk to Ryde, stopping at Seaview for a coffee. Coffee stop right next to Seaview Yacht Club, has nice tables and chairs out front. Get the bus back.

Walk up to the windmill for coffee, carry on up to Culver down for lunch. Windmill is National Trust, so look on their website for info. Route to Culver Down in a leaflet at windmill.

Stop in the Toll Gate cafe, its so bad/odd/strange (in a League of Gentlemen kind of way) its funny. Ask to use the loo, insist when declined and watch the reaction...its right next to Bembridge Yacht Club on the beach.

Have dinner in the Vine in St Helens, its the pub in St Helens village on the green. 15 mins walk from Duver Marina.

Lose an hour in the secondhand bookshop in St Helens, good selection of boaty books. On the green.

Sit on the beach all day, mess about in the dinghy.

Walk across the channel at LW springs.

Walk to the Crab and Lobster via the shoreline route. This is actually in Forelands Village, well sign posted from Bembridge.

Hire a segway from the back of Duver Marina.

Dinner in Dan's Kitchen - on the green in St Helens.

Dinner in Lockslane, just off the High St Bembridge.

Tea and cakes in Lotties, on the High St Bembridge. Nice cake!

Afternoon tea at the Priory about 15 mins from the Duver. Needs booking in advance.

Go to the lifeboat station - along the coast from Bembridge village.

Do have a bacon and egg roll for breakfast from the Ralvins just behind the harbour office at Bembridge. It will set you up for the day
