Belated Cherbourg report

Thanks again from all of us to Nick and Ken for arranging a fantasticc w/e. By the way the atmosphere at my school rugby club dinner was more rowdy than Saturday nights dinner - and anyway rowdy can be fun - dare I say an integral part of sailing! I honestly believe that children benefit from both a decent challenge and a new experience. For their part they must behave properly. Hopefully if this balance is achieved all is well. They are also ideal for mast climbing if necessary!

Re: 2006 ..... ta for comfirming what I understood ...

My post 2006 was actually a "food for thought" one to get people to think and suggest possibles ... I never intended it to imply fault on Ken's / Nick's part ... as all know I was unlucky that conditions for a 25ft old MS like mine was not suitable ....

I would like to see more get-togethers though of many different styles and venues .... There is no reason why regions shouldn't have theirs etc. it doesn't have to be only Solent / Channel.

As to Mercury - as another said the Hamble has about enough attraction as a wet weekend in Wigan !! Much prefer a more 'classic' place even Littlehampton would be better !!!!

So how's about a small boat rally, a family rally, a BBQ rally, big boat rally, Cherbourg etc. etc. etc.

????????

Re: Chauvanism starts here...

There are many families who don't particulary like rough conditions, and one of the advantages of Mercury is that families can drive there to join everyone else. There are many female partners who are equal on board, and many who skipper themselves.

However, there are many who don't enjoy, but enjoy socialising with their boating mad partners friends. The Mercury meet allows them to join in without worrying about conditions. It's one of the reasons it's been successful in the past, with over 140 people turning up.

There aren't many places that can both cope with the number of boats, and catering for the number of people.
If it's not your cup of tea, just don't come, but similarly, don't knock it for the people who have hugely enjoyed it in the past.

If you want a different type of event, just organise it, like I've done several times now, instead of criticising the events that are set up, and that other people enjoy

I dont believe that Mercury has been choosen for any reason other than the fact that it is a venue that works, it is tried and tested. There are many weekends when one can enjoy a sail or motor to some destination that is a favorite of the individual.

I believe and I support Brendan, that Mercury is a venue where we can hold a social event. Come to that it could be a Travel Inn in the Midlands, but that goes a bit too far!

To hold a rally at Mercury does not have to be to the exclusion of any other rally that anyone wants to organise.

Maybe its time for one of those vote things.

If you had taken the trouble to read rather than scan my posts and in sequence you would see that I was not criticising but asking that if changes were being considered with a change of organiser perhaps it could be more SWMBO friendly, but if not then so be it. Bignick, who we met at last years event understood my comments well enough and I hope and believe understood too that they were in no way a criticism of him because I think he deserves a medal.

As far as the Mercury event is concerned too, I'm sure it is also good. My comments were not aimed at the event per se nor the organiser, but the fact remains that if I were to chose 20 possible locations for a weekend cruise, a trip to an MDL Marina in Hamble might come out 42nd.

Pardon me for having an opinion.

Robin
