Being retired; painful

Not sure if you mean by age or by contribution.
I don't know the average age across the forum but guessing I might be there or a bit under.
I don't feel there is a moral obligation to contribute other than according to each person's desire and judgement.

My point about the forum is that anyone under 40 or so doesn't tend to use 'traditional' forums but people tend to use more current social media. Hence my observation that this forum will run it's course over the next while. I think you can see it already. Particularly, for example the east coast forum. It used to be hugely active in the early 2000s, now much less so.

For me ybw is a fantastic resource for serious sailing stuff, passage planning advice, technical advice and the like. The rest of it is mainly just mild entertainment.
The whole point of the banter and rubbish is to remind people of who is around when serious advice is needed.

Great base. High on our list. Sadly we’re not very high on their list (198/236), so it will be quite some time before we are able to join you there. 🙁
If you pop in and speak to them they might be prepared to offer a 10 month contract on the water and July/August on the hard and let you skip up the list. They offered me that at la trinite a few years ago.
Many French people only actually want July and August especially if they are paris based.

Age is the only metric where these forumites are above average

Lovely place. I delivered a yacht there once. Had a couple of days to look around afterwards. Sailing looks fab. Only downside I reckon is the single road access to the island.....at least that's what our cab driver moaned about a lot on the ride to the station!

Never been to that part of Brittany although we did visit the stones when we were staying at Rochfort en Terre. Got rather put off when we were descended on by a swarm of huge wasps. The kids were quite young at that time, the 30 year old sitting opposite me at the moment was in a stroller then, and we were terrified of them getting stung.
I guess it's another place I could put on my list to visit - up the canal du midi/Garonne to Bordeaux then follow the coast!

We were going to move to Narbonne .....we viewed a house that we liked...and took a walk in the local vineyard to discuss what we were going to do....when a bee chased my dog....my dog didn’t like bees....so we just walked away and looked in a different part of the country

Oh, l like Narbonne, or at least the middle bit of it with the canal and the cathedral. The indoor market is fabulous too.

I cant wait to retire. Maybe Ceribus should offer to help these guys. Should be tax funded and not a charity in my opinion, but such a worthy cause.

I have a friend who had a removals company. He would take people off to France and Spain and then, a few years later, bring them back again belongings and all. Never fancied a move abroad myself.

At a recent retirement planning seminar the FA advised that the peak spending value of retirees is around early 80’s. He also said that many still save for a rainy day.

The point he was making, is spend the money when you are fit and well, stop trying to accumulate wealth in retirement.
Unfortunately it is a difficult habit to break, it's how you have lived your life, a better life for you and an inheritance to pass on.
(Un)fortunately?? Rachel Thieves changed the pension rules so, New car, full suite of new electronics for the boat, PLUS New Upholstery - - learning slowly.

It is a difficult habit to break and I'm sure the reason why is that many people find more comfort in the financial security provided by a healthy bank balance rather than the fleeting pleasures of living a life filled with ostentatious possessions and the most fashionable novelties and gadgets.

Very likely a case of once a saver then always a saver - and in an increasingly insecure and unstable world if you can pass the benefit of that comfort and security to your children and grandchildren when you no longer need it then why wouldn't you?

Yesterday I had Tex-Mex food for lunch
I don't think I have ever had Tex-Mex in France. I rarely eat it in the UK because it's usual very expensive and pretty crap. It's good in Texas but then you have to put up with Texans.
Best I've had was in Tucson, Arizona

I’m not big on Mexican food…but I do get the occasional yearning for it
