We're going to the show next week, Wednesday PM and all day Thursday. Staying overnight in the Travel Inn at Excel. SO.... can some experts direct me to good beer, in good pubs, ideally a short walk or easy public transport ride from Excel? Food might also be a consideration, but secondary to proper beer in a proper pub.
The easy transportation needs to repeatable, in reverse, when full of aforementioned beer, late at night.

Thank you.

Alistair
There should be a post icon of a pint of beer.

Best bet is head into london. There is some stuff around canary warf, but that would need you to change trains, or walk from Poplar. However if you get the DLR all the way into town, You could get off around tower hill which is next to St Katherines dock - there are a few nice restaurants and pubs around there - and if you cross tower bridge to the south bank there are a lot of restaurants on the river front opposite st kaths. Or go to bank and get on the tube to the west end (Holbon or tot ct rd)- loads of pubs and restuarants of all descriptions. DLR from Excel to bank should be about 10 mins, Bank to Holborn about 5 mins. Plus waiting time.
OR if you fancy a nice trip - why not take the river boat from excel - I think it goes to St Katherines dock and Savoy Pier - which is bang in the middle of the west end.

This link will give you all the travel info

Re: Beer & Boats - LIBS

Why not take the opportunity to call in on the Cruising Association Headquarters in Limehouse.
You could check for details at their stand at the Show.
Very handy and I have found it welcoming (but I am a member).
Enjoy.

Take the DLR to Greenwich, only 10mins or so.

The Trafalgar Tavern and The Admiral Hardy both highly recomended, excellent beer and atmosphere (and with appropriate nautical theme !)

Cafe Sol Mexican also in Greenwich good for a cheapish meal in a lively atmosphere.

Had a few pints of Fullers last year in the bar/resturant near the main entrance, I couldn't fault it at all!

But be a bit wary of venturing around the local areas, I used to live in Custom House and worked in North Woolwich, It used to be and still can be in some parts a very rough place!
