Can someone explain the term I've heard several times that screws attached to glassed wood or through decks should be "bedded". What is this bedding and how is it achieved
The bedding is just some type of sealant to stop the water following the screw in to the boat. The best way is to put the screw in and tighten up slightly and then remove put some bedding compound in the hole, on the thread and shaft and then put back in and tighten up. The type of compound to be used is another matter but Sikaflex? seems to be the best and expensive, but you get what you pay for.
....for silicone when bedding. Silicone leaves non-removable and non-visible traces almost for ever. The residual stops paint and sealant to adhere in that area in the future.
Never use Silicone on a boat. It belongs around the bath tub at home only.
(Personally I do not like it even around there). I did declare my house a silicone free zone. You should have seen the expression on the face of the building contractors. Now they have to try and re-learn forgotten skills )
never use silicon within a mile of anything that needs painting.
it is banned from the premises of car factories and the mere
mention of it sends production engineers into violent rages .
well it did to the one sitting near me anyway.
Just repaired a deck hatch and the manufacture supplied 3M 3200 silicone to bond the perspex to the aluminum frame. In the right location etc. silicone is ok.
...does not contain silicone. Personally I always use Sikaflex for bedding things.
About silicone, it´s not only the question of painting. If you need to do some re-bedding in the future and silicone was once used, no other bedding compund will work.
No, I agree with the post saying that a boat should be a silicone free zone!
