Beaufort Scale definition.

Re: Blimey .... it does go on !!

I hope they stick with Beaufort Force in the forecasts and weather reports. 4 increasing 5 or 6 is a lot easier to remember and write down than 15 knots increasing 19 to 24 knots. The mind seems to prefer whole numbers between 1 and 10 somehow.

Mmmmm twattingly addictive aren\'t they !!

I always find it amusing that centuries old Mariners stuff get's pulled apart in Scientific drivel ..... anchor design, hulls and keels, sail design, and now dear old Lt. Beaufort or whatever rank he was ......

Does anyone really care how it was derived .......... it works, most people understand that Fx is xxxx and liable to be xxxx weather / sea-state etc.

Even dear old Beeb uses it in the Shipping Forecast !! BUT note that Inshore F/casts are quoted normally in wind-speed ..... confirming the comment .... Beaufort is offshore etc.

Re: Blimey .... it does go on !!

Yes and amidst the hiss and crackle if you catch anything about a 7, 8 or 9 you know it's time to head for home as fast as possible!!!!

Amid hiss and crackle ....

or stay in the pub and wait for better weather ...

That'll be a guinness .... extra cold if you have it please ...
