Treat this with the way it´s posted, tongue in cheek with a serious undertone.

"We had 40 knots out there !!!"

"It was 8 gusting 9, she managed well"

"I have been out in a 9 and didnt need trysial, storm jib etc (replace with what you will)"

Magazine articles..............

"She handled well with the steady Force 6"

"I only need to add the 3rd reef in a 7 or above"

/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, IMHO, the worst thing to ever happen to yotting was the dubious reliance on the all singing wind speed indicator.

Watch it closely, record the peak, and BAMM ! thats what we had.. lull others into a false sense of security, lull oneself into an even more dubious sense of secuirty.

It AINT what it gusted to, it AINT what the gizmo recorded, and it certainly AINT wot yer mate said it was.

Magazine articles.. too many show a typical yot in the solent and state it handled well in a force 5, 6 7 etc... BULL !!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Look at the background !.. what sea conditions, what whitecaps etc.. Mr x buys one, takes it out on a certain forecast and wants to make tea whilst casually steering in the Force 6.... Just like the reviewer............ /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
LMFAO !

Beaufort was originally designed to represent wind AND sea conditions, not mutually exclusive.. too many numptys look for the peak gust and... its gospel man.. they been out in it...

waht about a 1.8 gust factor and sea conditions ?. what about the unstable air situation as opposed to fairly constant wind, oops, lack of control, broach or knockdown.....

Seriously, for the ones who fit the above (Of COURSE... not many do /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) then look at the true definitions and when quoted, make sure you are quoting what is really happening, not what the peak gust was....

Anyways.. Beers chilled now, the sun is trying to shine.
Sat here in a force 5, oooops, sorry, read 3 with gusts....

Too many unsuspecting yotti pilots fall for this, at their expense. If you quote Beaufort, at least understand it. too many dont, or want to impress.
Happy sailing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's all explained in "Heavy Weather Sailing" (Adlard Coles). Beaufort wind strengths are averages, not peaks.

In the same way wave heights should be measured as mean height as opposed to the distance between the peak and the trough.

Yeah, I'd agree with that!

I've been out several times when the crew were claiming wind speeds over over 40 knots and we were "comfortable" (must be true, the gizmo said so!) but only once when the dial was consistently over 40.

And I'm in no particular hurry to do that again, we were not so comfortable!

Top speed is another great one. 14 knots out of a 30 foot cruiser..!? That must have been the mother of all waves you were coming down...!

Re: Beaufort, Bullsh&t and Boating

I also entirely agree, but has anyone thought about the way a wind-instrument underestimates the wind due to the angle of heel. The real wind is something like the indicated speed divided by the cosine of the heeling-angle, with a correction for the apparent wind-angle of course.
It's all getting too much; I prefer to leave people to their fantasies.

Re: Beaufort, Bullsh&t and Boating

That'd be ."The real wind is something like the indicated speed DIVIDED by the cosine of the heeling-angle," wouldn't it, so in effect you are saying the wind is actually stronger than indicated? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Flaming
Must confess... truly yer honour Sir.. we DID have 10.5 over the ground once, in a 34 foot ketch..
Mind you, it was in the Chanel du Four, at tickover..
Mind you, the 75 foot waves were worrying... the gimbals on the cooker could hardly cope with the stoganof or whatever a stew is called. the lanyards were a limping and the halyards hollering, the foredeck was forelorn, the stern strern and we were all captain cooked, but we had fun. !!!! me jib had gybed and me try tried, but we knew the worst was to come....... the plotter was plotted, the gps geeped and the bilges bilged with the infamous can labels, but, we still had fun.... an hour later, the lookout said lookout, we were heading for the rocks, thank god we said, the ice was finished, after refilling our GnT with new rocks (Slice n Ice) we headed for Brest, aint nothing more that can please a man after facing the cruel sea I says.. I drew the curtains, so the crew couldnt see, and life was good... the crew were for Camertet, I was for Brest... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif They went to cameret in the jolly boat, but alas, not a jolly good boat (Bought on ebay) I cast them adrift, lubbers, I sailed on, after a few more gins I could see two brests... then I relaxed...
A force 4 is not the weather to be in hahah ! me heartys....
Me parrot had crapped down me left shoulder as we steadily came up into the breeze.... Jim Lad !
I SWEAR I heard me ol Shipmate ´Peg Leg Polly´saying.. or moaning quietly... "Wheres ya wallet Slarty" but I could have been mistaken.. if it weren´t for ol Pol´I would have joined Davey Jones, It was only fer her insistent calling that I reached inside me Mustos to find I was .. damp.... HaaHaaa !... This made me take 3 sheets to the wind and wear me ol souwester... the souwester shielded me eyes... the shielding allowed me to see the dim light of "Dead mans" mark... ol Pol saved me life, whilst me shipmates were pounded to gravel on the banks of the llyods n Tsb, a graveyard for many...

Haaahaaa. and Hahhaaaaaa again...
As King Authur said to the Alsation, you cant send a Knight out on a dog like this....

Re: Beaufort, Bullsh&t and Boating

as i have no wind indicator,(it blew away in a force????) i'm never sure what the wind speed is ,ignorance is bliss, it seems to be not enough, enough and f,,k where did that lot come from. the latter usually as you are about to enter the marina with no bowthruster,

Not a drop, passed me lips, HIC !
Beer at 1 euro 20 fer 6..... I says its a fine thing.... throw the gold outya chest n replace it with valuable...
Slarty, off to bury it on the Paseo Maritimo...... along with me other loot.....

Me GODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it just gusted to a 5, better lay a Bahamian moor n add me chubb... also me flopper stoppers n me tripline... theres a few trees on the harbourfront, will take lines ashore n secure... maybe a reefed mizzen n get the tart to stand anchor watch...
Set the gps anchor alarm, get me satphone out n the epirb ready, the grabbag is full of cornedbeef, but hey, it will see us through and provide adequate trading for the ubiquitous japànese fishermen who haul us out of the pacific.
We plan ahead!

"Force 6, ...umbrellas used with difficulty". Wonderful! Reminds me of being in Georgetown, Bahamas when the cruisers decided to hold a wind powered tender race. The rules forbade the use of any fixed rig or attachment point so a crew member stood in the boat holding some form of wind gathering device - hat, towel, canvas dodger - while the other tried to steer. The course was downwind from offshore about 200 m or so, onto the beach. We had managed to acquire an umbrella and this was to be our secret weapon. It was blowing a hooly on the day and we took off like a rocket and soon had a massive lead. Then the brolly inverted and we stopped dead in the water. Must have been a force 6, I suppose. The race was won by Nigel Calder's daughter, Pippin, no doubt using some sort of engineered solution her Dad came up with.
