Hello all,
I am the new chap at MBY and we are looking to write a feature on people who have bought boats recently, despite the economic doom and gloom. Have any of you guys bought a new or used boat recently and if so, would you be willing to tell us more about your decision?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers!

Hi,

I bought one in march off a dealer who was struggling! The boat was as it was when arrived i.e. no PDI...bought as seen. saved £4k off the new price or 40%! Only bought it because it was a bargain and as a recession was coming I wanted to minimise depreciation. I then kitted it out from dealers who needed quick cash sales. Saved £7.5k overall on a £22k boat was was very happy...but I did all the leg work.

I am very happy with the boat and glad I made the decision to buy..and I have all the VAT receipts and paperwork.

Cheers

The dealer since went into administration and Gibbs took over the dealership

We have bought a new (to us) boat - survey is friday. Bought as a partnership to cut costs and carry on boating.

Would be happy to write about it for the usual fee (ask hugo /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Hi I bought in July this year after a year out of boating, the crunch I would say was starting then as this same boat was for sale in the same yard 18 months prior to me buying it with the same broker at what was then probably market value as it was pristine condition.

18 months on, only silly offers as the broker put it and no sale.
I looked again but was only carpet treading really as the offer i made previous was turned down and what the owner was looking for was way beyond my budget.

2 days later my previous silly offer was accepted, just shows you what was on the wall, maybe now I could have bought for even less.

We bought a two year old boat and took dely end July, does that count? Traded a five year old 30 ft for a two year old 32 ft. We had planned on going bigger but had a bit of compromise and prudence with an eye on the future of the economy and red so decided the 32 footer would do for now! Ok, its only two ft more but gives second cabin, two engines, generally more space, reasonable flybridge etc and it was very well spec'd for a reasonable price bearing in mind new ones had just seen a 15/20% increase due to EUR rates.

Thank you very much for your replies so far, when I get back in to the office tomorrow I will discuss with Hugo and get in contact.

Thanks again!

I bort a new Sq58 about 3 weeks ago. Well, have paid deposit, and pay the rest/take ownership in mid/late December. Tell you more about my decision? Blimey. I'm not really sure why I bort it cos I already had/have one, but it seemed a good idea in the heat of the moment and the salesman was very pushy. :-)

I bought a 25ft diesel engined RIB back in the summer at about 30% less than asking price at the time and about 40% less than the original asking price with a service and free mooring thrown in. I don't think I would have got that deal last year

Hey, that's my company's corporate colours you're talking about which was very convenient but best not go into that

Unfortunately, the engine isn't amazing. It's a VW Tdi 150hp lump. Very torquey, very smooth, just not very powerful. Still, the boat is good for 32-34kts. However, I have plans for the engine. I have been talking to a well known diesel chipping co and they reckon they can up the power to 185hp which, with a prop change, should give about 38kts

blimey, that colour schemes a bit 1990's /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Looks like a proper machine though

More 1960s, but that's only to be expected from a man of Mikes' age..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

At least I hadn't just received my bus pass in 1960 unlike a certain Taiwanese tub owner we could name /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
