If you did get stuck in reverse, could you not just turn the propeller round to go forwards again?

The drawing Vic put up looks very like the box I fixed last year. But the cones were not metal to metal. There was a friction material like brake lining on one side of each set. The problem was no neutral, not stuck in gear. Solved it by adding shims in two places to add some space between the two sets. No adjustment was allowed for and the only cause I could think of was the wrong oil swelling the linings.

If it keeps happening Dylan, you should be able to get the ridges skimmed off the cones. Err always assuming that you can find a traditional old fashioned machine shop somewhere, or an old codger with a rescued lathe in his garage.

I let it go that in this thread the slug was accused of being manky

but to suggest that the Darlington Duo ever cobbled anything....

what you saw on the film was precision engineers working under difficult conditions in a grubby old boat

grubby not manky - Jill has been down so the interior of the slug is shining, clean and fragrant

give me two days aboard and I will soon have things back to normal.

By the way, the first of the sails for Rebeccas Seawych project arrived today from Patrick Benfield of this parish

I have made up a free KTL sub for him under the name of niceman1

the sail is in terriffic nick - no mouse holes in it at all

its a delicate eggshell blue and in great nick

I found some battens that will fit from my garage supply

The Seawych has had a new companionway hatch cut for it - progress is impressive

CONES, not coons!

Cona is the portuguese word for a womans bits! coons is plural of co on, the shortening of the word barracoon which comes from the portuguese barracão (pronounced barracoon with an almost silent n)which means a place where slaves where kept whilst awaiting sale. This where the word co on comes from when it is used as a derogative term. Much the same as the n word, it came from the portuguese negra, meaning black, as in Ponta Negra, Black Point or Pointe Noire just north of Soyo where I used to work.

What I would recommend is ,loosen off the engine mounts so that the engine flops about a fair bit as the vibration will shake it into action like it used to !

exactly the problem I'm having with mine. When entering harbour I have to regularly take out of gear and back in or it sticks solid. I've found the problem is less if I don't push the lever fully forward, but I dont know if this would cause long term issues (like in a car with the clutch half in?) The cable on mine moves freely - def the 'box at fault. When the engine cools I can move back to neutral ok. Problem worse if engine is driven hard.
Would love to get to the bottom of this
