I have often wondered, why is it that most bearded sailors are also bald, is this some form of coping strategy? And indeed why do you go bald on the pate rather rhan the chin?

Appparently 50% of baldies suffer from psychological damage according to a clinical study.

Perhaps some of the follically patellically challenged and chinically enhanced could comment?

... is there not a Billy Connolly joke of the Bearded Baldy? Rings a bell. Something about never knowing if they are standing on their head. Or not.

I can't comment on the dual condition you seem to be worrying about. However, it is assumed that baldness occurs as a result of intense cerebral activity creating heat and thus an inhospitable environment for hair. The beard is presumably an attempt to minimise excessive heat loss from the rest of the head.. People who suffer from neither condition presumably have little brain activity. Women tend to keep their hair for entirely different reasons of course.....

Zeffie can you enlarge? Are you bald on the pate and the chin .. if so what coping strategies do you use?

In times past it was necessary for Scots to grow beards in order to frighten the English - e.g. Rob Roy McGregor, Robert the Bruce, Danny McGrain. However this is less necessary now and anyway beardies these days seem to inspire derision rather than fear - obvious examples being Noel Edmonds, Jeremy Beadle and Paul D'Aniels (that's a wig not a beard - Ed

It\'s a matter of Testosterone.....

...pure and simple.

You either have it or you don't

And if you have it, you don't worry what hairless wee boys who can only shave twice a week think of it.

i happen to know that oor jimi has a woolly titfer that meets both requirements and that he was recently reunited with it .... which goes a long way to explain his predicament .....

15 years of psychotherapy has been the main one though I find shaving my chin reassuring since it reminds me that only the location of hair has changed over the years, not the quantity.

As somebody who is undergoing the stress of loosing the hair on the upper most part of my head should I be seriously considering redressing the balance by growing a beard? However being blighted by a healthy pinch of the ginger gene would it be worth my while, or make me a target of derision?

Regards, Jeff .

.. this ginger gene is, i understand, common amongst milkmen? I too am so afflicted but not a ginger hair is to be seen amongst any of my forebears ...

Re: Not always

I am a beardy with a full thatch. The beards crap though and the hairs on my chest are in single figures which gives a poor inpression for a ruffty tuffty sailor.

It's not helped by the fur being a grey colour.

My daughters think all sailor men are middle aged, greying with beard. This is based on extensive observations in marinas while vainly hoping some youngish racing types with no beards might turn up.

Re: Not always

*Cough*

Neither of us have a beard, but I fear for my future years. My old man is the epitamy of "saltyness", but 30 years professionally at sea has got to take its toll. Very beardy and thinning he is, all my friends claim my father is Cap'n Birdseye.

Aaahaaaarrrrrrrrrrr!

Re:Capt. Birdseye rules, OK?

Possible answers:

1.Bald sailors have low booms, and stiff necks...

2. wind in the hair reduces root strength, and it starts falling through the head only to re-appear at the chin. (according to my then 8 year old - he reckoned there was nothing in the way anyway!)

3. Older sailors have older boats - no running hot water for shaving!

4. balding = result of worrying about EU bearotwats latest idiocies for our hobby.

5. Ditto re MDL (and others) latest round of price hikes.

6. Beards - disguise for those little embarassing moments in sailing. In extremity you can always shave so as not to be recognised when returning to the YC bar.

7. Keep the hairline low to reduce windage and angle of heel (notably on the way back from the bar).

8. Beards improve windproofing round the neck - stops those irritating draughts round the collar of the oilies.

9. Fundraiser for RNLI etc - a sponsored beard shave can raise £400+ per beard if handled properly.

10 Baldness allows for much snugger fitting headgear.

11. Bald heads are excellent weather stations - very sensitive to changes of temperature, and makes a first rate rain detector!

12. A bald pate gives advance warning of the need to apply sunblock.

13. dont have to pack a comb.

Anyway - me, psychologically damaged? Of course not - its just that everyone keeps getting at me.....

the field is yours , gentlemen......

Getting Personal

JJ and I may both have hair that we part with a towel and clearly demonstrate our ability to grow facial hair.My Father used to run a line past me about not cultivating on my face what grew wild on my backside with regular monotony. What you can say about both JJ and I is that we cannot be accused of having a low forehead....unlike some.
