Hello, I'm planning a trip to Scilly in mid-May with my twin-keel Biloup89. What do you think about beaching at Bryher on Green Bay until 30N? Thanks for your feedback.

Approach

Green Bay is a popular drying anchorage for vessels that can take the ground, and which offers good shelter
from all winds except from S to SE. It is not suitable for fin-keel yachts unless they are equipped with standing
legs and can take their weight on their keel.

Approach with enough depth of water either from New Grimsby Harbour and pass between Merrick Island and Church Quay; or from between Samson and Bryher with Puffin Island astern on a course of 000° avoiding Lubbers Rock, Crabs Gate Ledge, The Brow and Three Brothers. There are some rocks and small boulders on Green Bay, but when anchoring you can usually see the seabed through the clear water to avoid these.

Facilities

Bennett Boatyard at the S end of the bay offers facilities including boat storage, emergency repairs, showers and toilets by arrangement.

Moorings and Anchorages

Anchorage:

This anchorage is not suitable for fin-keel yachts unless they are equipped with legs as the anchorage always dries. For vessels which can take the ground Green Bay offers valuable shelter from all except SE winds. Green Bay may be approached with sufficient rise of tide by using Merrick Island as a stern bearing on 080°.

Green Bay is fine, subject to wind direction as mentioned in post 2. With the Scillies you must be prepared to move location if the wind blows up. There isn't one 'safe' location apart from possibly the mooring buoys at St Mary's harbour and even those can be exposed at times.

We've done it many times in our Ovni 385 - our go to protected bay in Scilly! We find it far more comfortable generally there than the dreadful rolly moorings in St Mary's, and have stayed on Green Bay for days in a row.

But as above, any trip to Scilly needs careful planning and monitoring of weather!

Dried out there twice and each time had a storm come through, the last one being Storm Evert.
Very safe (direction dependant of course) and a great spot to stay and visit the very relaxed island.
