Hi all, I am contemplating making a set of carbon beaching legs for a 34ft deep V old racing hull. The boat is quite narrow and light, the V gets steeper towards the bow but all the weight is aft of the beam

Access midships for rigging legs is almost impossible, the options are roughly 2 metres forward of the beam, or 3 metres aft of the beam. Are the legs better off aft where there is more weight, or forward where the V steeper? Aft would be tidier and more convenient, but curious if anyone think one option or the other would be less of a compromise of effectiveness

thanks in advance!

Probably just the occasional tide dried out on the beach and now and then to scrub. More for flexibility sake than necessity and only in settled weather

Towards the stern seems to be the favoured position. Anywhere from aft of midships back. Many boats in the CIs have drying legs, some even mount them on the transom, They are not designed to take any weight, just to keep the boat balanced on its keel.

Thats really helpful thanks, i was planning on building a big new swim platform as well so potentially mounting legs on there would save a lot of grief, and also keep the legs short as possible. just the info i was looking for mate thanks for that.

They were built at the factory for my Corvette. They mount about 2m forward from the transom.

When I have used them the boat will sit on one or the other at a slight angle. They are stout things, about 150mm square, and they engage under the turn of the bilge, with a 20mm bolt into the aft cabin each side. Each has two guy lines that rise to the aft and midships cleats to brace the legs into position.

The photo shows the boat sitting on the stbd leg, she is not actually touching the piles.

Perfect just the info I was after, thanks guys, ill have a play with mounting them on the new swim platform when I build it this winter. All the best, hope lockdown is going ok for everyone

this will be built from scratch with the intention of having legs mounted to it so will be up to the task
