BBQ @ The Rocks 8th / 9th September

Don't worry - I know not to take them too seriously!

Came up the Deben for the first time in June - very impressed. Entered about 1hr30 before HW - averted eyes from sand banks and was fine. Came out once Horse sand was covered (as told by Bawdsey HM) in F4 southerly - a tad bumpy /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I can always raft up and say that I forgot to bring an anchor with me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If Neil is going to use his technique as above I think we could all raft up on Morgana and nothing would shift us. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Roger,

The holding is just fine at the Rocks.

And there is plenty of space at that part of the river to allow you lots of time to pick your spot, and get the hook down without rushing and without obstructing anyone coming up or down the river...

In fact, its a pretty good spot to practise your technique!

Uh Oh......

Last time I anchored in the Twizzle, I had Full Circle rafted one side, and Vreny rafted the other.....

I've got good solid ground tackle, so wasn't worried about it holding or breaking.....

But I did have visions of the anchor being 6' below the river bed!!!!!

Is this still scheduled for next Saturday?

As predicted, the return of the kids to school heralds some decent weather so may head off for a few days before the meet up. What time are you meeting?

we plan 2 be there with "ankle biters" weather permitting.
do we need an Anchor if so wot type is best can i use rope or is chain best, do i need a motoring cone can i use a mast hd all round white /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Neil

Fro the tide times see my post at the start of this thread.
High tide on the Deben bar 09:45.
This is neap tides
There should be over 2m of tide until 12:00.
High tide on the Sunday is 10:30

I came in today with about 2m rise of tide and had a minimum of 3.5 m from the West Knoll buoy towards the Mid Knoll buoy.

Give the buoys a reasonable clearance 3 or 4 boat lengths and don't turn up the river until you are half way between the Mid Knoll buoy and the beach.

I expect to be at the rocks from mid-day onwards.

I would assume that the BBQ will be in the evening.

I have read your BBQ rendevous with interest & you may already know that Woodbridge Maritime Festival is on this weekend with many old wooden boats on view & several events taking place. It may be worth a visit.Woodbridge Cruising Club is open all day Sunday on the prom so pop in for a pint if possible.
I hope you are not offended by me mentioning the high tide times at the bar for this weekend but Admiralty Easytide shows 1009 & Harwich Harbour Authority shows 1005 for Sat.Likewise Sunday is 1106 & 1100 hrs.
Hope you have a good weekend.

Thank you for the info.
I was partly aware that something was going on at Woodbridge.

I may well pop into WCC on Sunday afternoon on my way home.
Is it easy to find by road?
Is there parking?

My tide times come from the Benfield tide plotter and are for Bawdsey.
Our times are not that far apart and with visitors being careful with timing, I am sure that they will be o.k.

You can park in the public car park signposted on the right as you come in to Woodbridge from the south,or go further on & park at Budgens, past the Tidemill entrance.
Woodbridge Cruising Club is on the riverbank(black building) downstream from the Tidemill Marina.Walk along the riverbank.I am sure you know Woodbridge is off the A12 N/E of Ipswich going towards Lowestoft.
I use Belfield as well & asked him if he could include Woodbridge Haven & Woodbridge for East Coast users. He said he was not able to.Bellfield is also very short of Belgian ports i.e. no Zebrugge or Blankenberg for us East coasties

Question for Debenites.

My boat draws 1.7 metres so it looks as if I can only get in or out of the Tidemill very near HW. Is it feasible to get into the river and up into the Tidemill on one tide, and vice versa when you leave?

I came over the bar in June about HW-0130 but that doesn't leave long to get to the Tidemill.

Only Antwerp (and it's locks) for Belgium.

E-mailed Bellfield about this - they claimed they would have to pay for other Belgian ports (Zeebrugge, Blankenberge, Ostend & Nieuwpoort).
Seems strange as info is freely available elsewhere on the web.

Going up its fine. You go fast with the tide and have loads of time. It takes the tide 40mins to reach Woodbridge.

Coming back notes:
At springs, with a boat that will motor at 6.5 knots and draws 1.5, I can get from Tidemill to Ferry before the ebb as really set in. It doesn't actually turn until a bit after HW Felixstowe ferry (because of momentum the level further up the river is still lower than that at the ferry).

At neeps we arrive at the ferry well after the ebb is under way but so long as its not blowing hard onshore, and you don't go aground, its ok.

The tide guage at the tidemill is dead accurate. I sometimes lean the keel against the sill until we bob over it, but swmbo hates this and makes me pull up the floor to inspect the keel bolts!

If you need an hour by hour prediction of the hight over the sill I can let you have one.

Thanks shmoo

I have the hourly predictions from the website thanks.

The Bawdsey HM told me that as long as Horse Sand was covered then I'd have enough water at the bar - sound OK to you?

All will be tested shortly!

Going in? That sounds like a harbor master's joke to me. You can't see the Horse until well after crossing the bar!

Not sure about the Horse - Bar rule of thumb.

The problem coming out is, if you are late and and on the fresh ebb, that much of the flow, which is considerable, goes though the shingle spit. Or at least seems to - perhaps it just goes over it. By the time you get to the green buoy the current is almost all dissipated - its gone somewhere.

This means that there is quite a cross-set onto the shingle spit. Going out on the ebb keep well away from the spit (sea) side. There is lots of water quite close to the beach until you are most of the way down the rock revetment.
