BBC weather forcast

First trip out perhaps today, and definately racing tomorrow!

But the BBC weather forcast shows 3 mph from the south with sunshine, but the Met Office says "west backing south 4 or 5, increasing 6 in the north by Monday morning" for inshore waters, and netweather.tv says about 20mph from the south.

And as a follow up, did anyone see the TV program last night "Grumpy old men"? There was a feature on how irritating the news readers and weathermen/women have become. As it said, I don't really want to know what it was like yesterday, or even now, I just want to know what the weather forecast is...

Every time I run PB course I give the candidates a bit of homework - tomorrow morning tell me the HW time at Chatham, the local forecast and where you got the info from?

In the morning I stand in front of a large white board and write down the HW times and the forecast.

In the case of HW times it's the normal +/- 10 mins BUT when it comes to the weather forecast dahhhh.

We regularly have reports of wind from the NE, SW, Westerly backing southerly, Southerly veering westerly - wind strengths from bu**er all to hold your hat on, don't go!

Info is gathered from the beeb/itv tv forecasts, internet, BBC radio, Marinecall etc.

One thing that I have found is that the beeb tend to be cautious with strength but get the direction wrong and HMGC tend to over estimate the strength but generally get the direction right!

Once I have written all this down any self-respecting skippers reaction would be "what the hell". It would be impossible to make a decision based on such varying/conflicting info.

For me, I generally disregard wind direction and concentrate on wind speed - if there's a consensus that it's gonna blow I think about leaving, but if the wind is acceptable I'll use the mark one eye ball and decide whether to go or not!

Well at 1045 on Sunday sitting on board here the BBC Internet forecast for Poole is still showing Saturday, perhaps by Monday they will tell us what it did today.
