Did anybody see BBC's 3 Men in a boat go to Ireland last week? It was a two part, part 1 bog boring canal based, part 2 much more interesting on the shannon and aran islands. I bit darby O'gill and the land of the little people, but I think the two lads just wanted to slag the life out of Dara O'Brion

BBC iPlayer - 3 Men in a boat go to Ireland

The programme didn't really convey the major motor boating amenity that the Shannon system is but I suppose it was good light entertainment and made good tv.

Yep, top TV even if not so focussed on the boaty bits. Still it has has inspired swmbo to head over this summer (if we get one). in fact I seem to recall that the last one was the final clincher in getting the mobo purchase signed off!

Yup, part 1 a bit boring but part 2 was better. I couldn't believe the weather they had. Whenever I go to the west of Ireland, it's always blowing half a gale. I thought Dara O'Brien was a bit anal over the Irish culture thing. If all Irish people were like that, I'd never get out of the country alive:)

Yes in parts it was cringingly Darby O'Gill stage Irish from another era. Yes they were dead lucky with the weather. I met the producer earlier in the summer and questioned the merits of shooting a "boat" programme in October, never mind the Atlantic swell for access to the Aran Islands at that time of year. Two weeks after they finished shooting we had the worst flooding for 100 years, and four weeks later the coldest snap with severe icing for 50years. During the flooding there was controlled flooding of parts of Limerick city in order to protect the various Ardnacrusha scheme dams at and near the giant near Parteen wier. Best weather on the Shannon seems to be May and September.

Yes, great television. Good to note that starting diesel engines has improved over the last 50 years! And standing on the helm in that diesel fug on the barge must be hugely life shortening!

I preferred Gryffs Irish accent to Dara's.

Finally got to watch it on BBc Iplayer ,watched both parts back to back very amusing and interesting and gave a good view of some different types of boating.
By chance happened to come across an Irish website and lo and behold a load of whingers with exactly the same comments expressed about all the other previous 3 programmes(are you listening Thames boaters) ie not boaty enough, distortion of facts, not funny, for gawd sake what were they expecting.....
Thought the canal /river bits that were shown were absolutely beautiful and could be very tempted myself as for that dead boring sailing boat section ...Yawn :) :) :)
