Have found a Bayliner 2855 1996 after months of searching for a suitable boat. Can anyone give me some info on this model and its abilities? I had a smaller Bayliner Capri Cuddy back in 89/90 that virtually fell apart, was I just unlucky?
 
Unlucky......no! They didn't get the nickname of binliner for nothing. In saying that, I quiet like them. Best to get a surveyor to look at it for you. They see things you don't.

Myself and KevL each had a Bayliner 2556 for couple of years, I personally found it a great little boat with good capabillities.
As mentioned, the earlier models had a bad rep and were nick named Binliners, I think this was down to the poor quality of fittings etc.
Be careful with high moisture content in the hull, they tend to suffer from this, mine had it, but after a winter ashore the readings were down to a very acceptable level.
As for sea keeping, I had my one dipping her nose , water flying over the flybridge and still felt safe and within the boat's boundaries.


The only downside I found with mine is..... Here it comes Byron... Because they are such a good looking boat, they tend to attract Hookers and drunken old sea dogs, so WATCH OUT! (they'll nick your McDonalds).

I would certainly recommend them. The modern ones are a world away from the ones that gave the company a bad name. Even they were and still are excellent value for money. I have an 80's spec Bayliner. If I had wanted a similar spec boat from a "quality" builder, I would have had to pay three times, yes three times as much.

I looked at the 2855 loved the wide beam, I think it was the 2000 model I saw with improved helm seat and removal of the pulpit so it fits nicely into a 9 m berth. I bought a Sea Ray in the end but will be replacing with a 3055 in a couple of years unless I find a Sea Ray 300/310 I can afford, though I imported my current boat so saved a few quid in fact about 8k. Get a survey though, and parts for my last Bayliner were easy to order and get delivered. The Sea Ray parts service needs some work and not as slick as Bayliners. What engine has it got by the way? The 5.7 struggles with a such a large boat.

There are a lot out there who are quick to poke fun at Bayliner as a cheap American cardboard boat manufacturer however you are the first previous owner I have come across who has an axe to grind. Syd and I bought our 2556’s at about the same time, I had no problem with mine at all and I got what I paid for her when it came time to sell. My wife and I only changed the boat because we wanted some thing a bit bigger but I would certainly look at another Bayliner if I was in the 20-40K market as I believe the give excellent value for money. You don’t get the absolute best quality fittings but you get an awful lot of them and standard spec is very high when compared to more fashionable makes. And anyway what is the point of having a “will last for ever” fit out if it’s in brown draylon with tassels.

Bayliner make well-appointed affordable boats that are seaworthy despite what anyone else may tell you. If someone tells you otherwise ask them how they know and I’ll bet it has more to do with the fact that Bayliner sounds like Binliner than first hand experience.

There were various power options available on the 2855 starting with the single 5.7L Mercruiser which will struggle to get over the hump especially with the mid season weed, much better with a 7.4L.

I have had a 2452 from new in 1995 and had no problems with it. Early boats can be a problem but the reality is (I guess a bit like Skoda, used to be awful, now better than a VW) If you go to BOC-WEB you will find lots of owners of 2855's with first hand info.
