HI Folks

Does anyone know how to access the horn on a Bayliner 285 i would appreciate some advice on how to Get it out to repair or replace it, it is located behind a small grill at the pionty end

Cheers every one happy boating.

Regards
Ken.

Check what voltage it's getting when you press the button then hit and replace as advised above.

It is probably worth going straight to a stainless trumpet horn or even a pair and fit them on the arch. The standard ones fitted behind a grill on the 'pointy' end get so much water in them, they are known to fail quite frequently and they're not very loud in the first place. :(

Most have had this experience as you can tell from the replies to your question.

The standard horn is accessed by removing the grill, it is either screwed or clipped in place depending on the model.

The horn consists of a vibrating metal plate (inside the trumpet) and a little "interrupter" coil/relay that caused it to vibrate. There is a small bolt that adjusts the interrupter gap, strip it apart and clean out the salt/corrosion and then connect to a battery and adjust the bolt for optimum vibration. It is surprisingly loud when it works ok.

You can access the horn by removing the mirrored panel over the forward berth. Simply disconnect the wires, remove the bolts and replace. It is mounted on a metal bracket which can be reshaped to accommodate another type of horn. It is a 12v unit.

I suspect the reason why it is squeeking, is that the lining in the grill that prevents water from coming in, has gone. As a result, salt water / spray may have collected inside the upward-pointing horn and caused it to deteriorate to this point. You may find that the metal bracket also has some rust which may make it difficult to remove the nuts. The good news is that the rust flakes off easily.

I recommend that you replace the grill at the same time, to prevent it from reoccurring.

+1
The standard horn is close to useless even if sounding. I'd take the opportunity to upgrade - personally happy with this:
