Hi

I'm looking to buy a 2001 bayliner 245 at the end of this year but would like to hire one first for a couple of days to make sure it's the right boat for me. Does anyone know of any company that hires boats of this size. I've had a look on the net but not been able to find anything. Im based in Glasgow and can travel.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

In my opinion there would be no-one that hires this type of boat. I'd say as a whole, that boat hire is quite rare due to the high cost of purchase, maintanence and fuel.

Really depends what type of boating your looking to get into i guess. If its mainly weekend breaks with wife and kids then this boat would be fine, plus trailerable. Any bigger and the cost increases also in all aspects.

As per the other reply I'm afraid you are going to find it impossible.

The cost of coding and insurance versus revenue mean it is unlikely as has been said. Your best hope would probably be a friendly owner inviting you aboard for the day in the hope you might see your way to picking up the tab when they go to fill up.

As others have said, you cant hire a 245 in this country, I have seen one in the Balearics, but I cant remember the name of the company.

The other problem you have is that they didnt start making the 245 till 2005/6. The model you are looking at is probably a 2455 or 2355 and they have a few differences.

Welcome to the forum, i'm sure there are some 245 owners on here, I have a Maxum 2400, which is a very similar boat.

I would suggest that the nearest you will get is to try one at a local boat show, Prossers of Glasgow often have these and you can try many of the boats for sale (with their Skipper operating the boat)

You can hire something similar on the Norfolk Broads, like a Shadow 26. This will be a bit bigger than the Bayliner, and more suited to hire use. The Broads boats will have a small diesel motor rather than a Yankie V8, but you should be able to get a feeling for the size etc.

We had a Sunbird 25ft which is very similar to the Bayliner/Rinker etc and kept her on the Broads for several seasons.

Try Windermere Aquatics in Bowness, they are bayliner dealers and are generally very helpful, at least you would be able to have a good look around one.

Cheers Ian.:)

Thanks again, I checked out the one in Antibes, I've also found a couple of companies in Croatia that charter this type of boat. I got my ICC a couple of years ago when I was first going to buy a boat, then my missus told me I was going to be a dad again, bang went the boat. Cheers

With respect you should be able to tell within the first few minutes if the boat is right for you. Whether you are right for the boat is another matter.
A Bayliner 245 on Windemere is a totally different animal offshore.
I would suggest (if you havent already done it) that you go on a RYA Powerboat Course so when you come to buy a boat you are able to make a decision based on experience.

What you can do in the UK is charter motor boats with a qualified skipper. It isn't the cost that is the problem, it's the insurance. There are lots of them on the Solent but unsure if any of them are Bayliners
