Should there be an enforcable speed limit within the confines of Cardiff Bay?

As much as I'm against legislation and even within the bay the existing speed limit is not inforced I think it is a good idea to have a speed limit.
There's plenty of good examples of reckless driving on the bay, several nights I've seen boats going around at 30kts plus, one stopped recently for no aparent reason, they probably picked up an unlit boy. Another two were going around in the same circle in different directions in the dark, contenders for the Darwin award no doubt.

There's a place to go out and play in the big toys and that's the Bristol Channel, big enough so as not to get in anyones way. Trouble is quite a few of the people speeding in the bay have much experience and no qualifications so how many would or could go outside the bay? I recently shouted at a guy going up the river causing a large wash and pointed out that there was a 5kt limit, his defence was that he had no log...
Another guy in a 36ft boat done the same twice while I was up the mast, he didn't see the problem, believe me 50ft up a mast clinging on changes your perspective!

From a presentation by the Bay Authority last year they were mentioning bringing in enforcement of the ICC within the bay which would at least help make sure that people know the rules of the road. Most other harbours have speed limits, why not here?

As with most thing in life it is the minority which cause the problem, education is a start hence the ICC being a good start for this situation.

I think it might upset the familly of who ever it hit at 30kts and that is the point I was trying to make.
Boats float, they bob about on water and thats acceptable, what is not acceptable is (w)reckless (the smiley should have gone here!) navigation and I've winessed it in the bay and grimaced at the antics of fellow boaters!
Surely some sort of traffic seperation scheme would help? At least we'd all be going in roughly the same direction.
Not out to slate anyone here just interested in good seamanship and safe boating.
There is, as others have said plenty of water outside the barrage.

live and let live

I don't like the speed of the boats in the bay because of the wash, and my wife will not take the helm when it is busy with the fast Boats operating, but.... REALLY..... live and let live there are too many officials handing out tickets and watching cameras on our roads, 8 knots I get from my boat.... I take pleasure out of watching people enjoy themselves let them, especially one time visitors.... where will the alternative stop hi-vis, speed cops, stop and search, Vat checks on diesel usage, goggles helmets RNLI Standard safety gear then we'll be safer. leave alone PLEASE:(:(:(:(:(

Some good points raises regarding keeping legislation out of the equation, and on reflection I have to agree.
Maybe commen sense should prevail with perhaps a more visible harbour master presence to deter "offenders"

Roll on the summer!

Common sense?

Do you mean common sense like this?

The RNLI see plenty of similar good examples...

Unfortunately it seems many people buy boats without the first idea what is involved and hopefully realise that it is not as simple as it first seems before something too drastic goes wrong.
The bay is not the place for inexperienced people to play at high speed. Some days it seems to be overcome by boy racers (albeit a bit older, same attitude) with no regard to COLREGS or common curtesy.

That is crazy no flares or knowledge. Only a stern light and a starboard side light. That is the kind of incident that supports the arguement for training and at least the ICC but that then agrovates people like me and lots of other people who have been doing all of their lives.

If there was a speed limit in the bay who would enforce it?
CHA are not filling vacancies on the harbour boats and at the moment have got their hands full clearing rubbish from the rivers,i cant remember the last time i saw the HM on the water.

Yellow cameras in boxes, Chris. That will stop buggers like you haring about the place. Paint white lines on the ripples as markers.

:D

Hi Martin,
happy new year to you both,(when do we stop saying that?)

From reading your posts i feel that the best idea would be to have a marked channel / Route which people could use to keep out the way of other water users who do not wish to be washed up etc etc and to make safer for younger users

what about the inexperienced people who are in the fast zone? This does not solve the problem.

Speed isn't the problem its the wake. Don't know who helms a fast boat but they stop pretty instantly. The worst are big heavy semi displacement boats.

'cause it will just give 'them' and excuse to have a uniform, guns and a faster boat to race up and down in. Oh and pick on smaller quieter boats who do not have life rafts and sixteen different colours of flares and are not wearing life jackets to go to the heads!
