I recently removed the Harken Halyard Winches (for servicing) from the coach roof of our 2004 Bavaria 36. They are fixed to the coach roof by 5no M6 machine screws which have a slightly tappered lead in. There are no nuts on the inside, so i'm wondering what the machine screws actually fix into. I'm hoping there are captive nuts or nutserts built into the strengthened deck section.
Does anyone know what the actual construction is?

Almost certainly bonded in aluminium plate, drilled and tapped using their wonderful CNC deck drilling machine! See the promotional video or pictures in the brochure.

And what brings you to that conclusion? This method of attachment has been used for years by Dehler and Bavaria. I have NEVER seen a detached winch.

Seems to me superior to bonding in a ply pad and then drilling 5 holes right through to use a nut and penny washer. Good potential source of leaks and rot! Never mind the exposed nuts inside to bang you head on or cover crudely with stick on vinyl head lining.

Oooh don't contradict him . He must have supporting data regarding loadings and construction and failures. Surely?

And to think they only sold 3500 Bavs last year /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I was just thinking of what I have seen when the headlining falls off certain "well built" boats from the past!

Don't go there /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif . I too read the endless posts regarding problems with so-called MAB's and far from feeling the need to snipe at them, feel sympathy for the owners.

I've had all the cr*p that can go with owning these'classics' ... headlining falling down/ balsa decks rotting / keels needed rebedding / Volvo gearboxes stripping and so on and I genuinely feel their pain. If I can add anything constructive BASED ON EXPERIENCE I do.

Just really don't understand the few ... and it is a few ... who seem to hang around in the shadows waiting to snipe at ANYTHING Bav related.

Some time ago a mast came down on one in the Solent .... and out they swarmed saying ''ah ha ... that's because Selden MUST build thinner masts ... just for Bavs!!!'

Yeh ..... right.

You are right. It is the one liners like this that irritate me, particularly when you are trying to help the OP with a useful observation.

As in the thread on Liveaboard, experience is what qualifies one to have an opinion, plus of course some understanding of what the issues are. I would not have considered a Bavaria until I tried one. Been a happy owner for 7 years.

Cheers - and I will try to control myself in future!

I agree. Bavs may well be cheap and cheerful but sneering comments help no -one.

I'm curious why the winches need to be removed for maintenance. Lewmar ones dont.
