We were goose-winging north from Shuna to Seil Sound recently (Torsa abeam) when we met a very shiny Bav42 tacking south on starboard. It looked as if they would pass fairly close in front of our bows.

It probably wasn’t necessary but we gave a little curtsy to port anyway just to let them know we were paying attention. As they passed, all four crew were standing in the cockpit looking over at us. I was doing a quick mental check to make sure I'd remembered to dress that morning when her skipper (I presume) called over “Lovely boat!” I replied in a similar vein.

Of course the title of this post is strictly TIC and I don't really think that her skipper had had a sudden revelation about downsizing or the desirability of an encapsulated keel but it does illustrate the fact that in the real world, real people seem able to appreciate each others boats for what they are and invariably say nice things to each other about them.

So what happens to all these real people when they sit in front of a computer screen? Is keyboard rage the modern plague?

I don't own a Bav ... but a MAB of scruffy appearance.

I often compliment a well turned out boat .... as example - A beaut of a Waterwitch in Yarmouth IoW .... she was immaculate and I called across to them and said what a beauty of a boat .... smiles all round.

It takes little effort and puts a smile on faces ....

The same thing that happens to people when they get behind a wheel of a car. I'm sure road rage and keyboard rage have the similar origins, detachment and anonymity.

Like you, we also appreciate these little gestures of appreciation from other yachtsmen. When we overtake a similar sized boat, I often see an uplifted arm and clear confirmation that we are two knots faster. Quite charming!
