Bavaria ocean 40 shattered side windscreen

Take the one out of the other side and take it to a glass shop and ask them to make two of them. Get them to make new out of lanimated glass so they won't shatter next time. Then keep the original as a spare.

Bavaria is German (Bavaria). Germany is not a Scandinavian country..:)

Indeed but on the web the only commercial suppliers of boat screens of this type are Norwegian or Swedish and I reckon that is where Bavaria sourced them. He is chasing Bavaria spares dept but is not optimistic for a 20 year old boat

Out of interest, what caused it to shatter, and what was it made of?

We don't know but it was a few days after the big gale and could have been a flying stone or other object or perhaps the boat was jolted against the pontoon and the shock did it. It is toughened glass (the sort that goes into myriad crystals when it breaks)

I bought two new windscreens for my motorsailer from this company http://www.thevehicleglasscompany.co.uk/ The screens are not square and have holes in them for wipers. No problem at all, reasonable price and prompt service. I came across them at a VW camper show but they are quite accustomed to doing work for boats.

Thanks Vyv - are you saying they cut them to size - was that from a template or measurements?

I discussed my requirements generally when I met Paul at Camperjam. I then sent a drawing of the layout, which is a parallelogram with a hole in the top. We had already discussed the thickness and settled on 4 mm, same as the sliding door in a VW van. There is virtually no limit to the shape they can produce. It is made in tempered glass. This is the drawing I sent.

Oh yes it is, or, at least, much of it was, since it was ruled by Sweden until not so very long ago. There are many reminders of this along the German coast.

I hope the Bavaria glass is not like many of the HR ones, which have to fit into a curved frame. I know people who have done it, but I'm keeping fingers and everything else crossed.

I've often had toughened glass cut to size by the local glass shop. They offer it in a series of thicknesses, will drill holes and chamfer the edges as required. Most of the pieces I've had cut are for going on the top of pieces of furniture I want to protect and wanted glass that would, if broken, break into lots of little granules not large sharp chunks. The glass people said they'd prefer drawings to work to as templates were often not precise enough. The folks locally were prepared to come and measure up if I wasn't confident of my measurements (at a cost): might that be an answer?

You'll pay through the nose for marine branded products. Go to a decent-sized glass merchants with measurements, or a template. They will be able to cut to size and send it out for tempering.
Make up your template in 4mm or 6mm ply or hardboard (depending on thickness of original glass),and check it by installing it in the frame, as you would an actual pane of glass. You could then trim off 2mm all round, to allow for half the thickness of a glasscutter, or bring it as is, but write clearly on it what the template represents.

I have a 40 Ocean too. You're right about being expensive and Scandinavian. The glass windscreen is made by a Norwegian company named Ertec, the same supplier that makes the Hallberg-Rassy ones, and is identical to those fitted on many HR models. You can see their logo on the glass panels. They used to be a Danish company named Bjerg, which looks more helpful with parts based on their website. Some parts are also available from HR-Parts, but not the panels. I would try contacting either of the Ertec companies (Danish first) and possibly HR-Parts if you can find out their matching boat model.

Fitting will be a major pain, as I believe you must remove the upper rail shared between all the panels before you can replace the one panel, or at least lift it off enough. You will need the special gaskets which are not available anywhere else, although when I've repaired mine I just used glazing adhesive sealant and that worked fine. The side pieces are slightly curved and held under tension for additional joy.
