To judge by the way Bristol Diver's thread on keel damage was hijacked by the Bavaria bashers and defenders I think we need a new forum purely for such posts. It needs to be set up so that any post which wanders off the the original thread topic to attack Bavarias or their owners is immediately detected and dumped there, where only the most rabid Bavaria bashers will bother to read it.

I don't own a Bavaria, but am just fed up with the almost constant antics of the "we hate Bavarias" brigade. Accept it, if its bigger and newer than your MAB, tough luck. You are entitled to your boat and the AWB owner to his. My own boat is an AWB, though I happen to think that the 45.2 is one of Jeanneau's better efforts. (I think the guy who presented the Empire of the Seas Programme yesterday was sailing one off Quiberon).

If you read to the end of the old thread you will find that another Sigma 38 with exactly the same keel crack has been spotted. This motivated the revival of the thread. In any case, the thread does make excellent reading. And probably causes a few red faces amongst those who lost their cool.

I have yet to own a boat that is perfect - it just depends how hard you look.

I don't understand why the argument focusses so much on Bavaria ( as opposed to other modern mass produced boats) any more than why the Bavaria owners respond by knocking British boats. I think there is room for a dispassionate discussion of modern boat design and build techniques but it seems that some owners take the line that commenting on the brand of boat they have bought is a personal insult. nFor example:

Hairline cracks in the gelcoat at the edges of the deck close to the coachroof are fairly common on the 45.2 and some other boats with wide side decks which flex a bit when heavy crew run around on them. It is a minor problem and easily fixed. I am having mine repaired this winter. The most serious 45.2 failing is that the shroud fittings are tied to the chainplates by substantial stainless steel bars. Nothing wrong in that except that in some cases (mostly post 2000 boats) the fittings do not line up dead straight, which causes the bars to be pulled into a curve and puts strain on the deck close to the shroud fittings. The cure is tapered washers at the bottom of the bars and re-bedding the fitting at the top, again I am having this done overwinter.

It also has a useable chart table, something missing on a lot of boats. Another feature that I like is the huge forward lazarette, which was omitted on the later 45 model.
