A Bavaria 39 on a delivery run from Denmark to Norway lost its keel in a grounding. They didn't realize the keel was gone (!) and motored 100nm to the importer who craned it out and had a surprise. The article concluded that the bolts were sheared off and the laminate was OK. The boat will be repaired.

In Norwegian, but some interesting pictures; Seilmagasinet

Can Bavaria turn this into a positive?

" A spokesperson for Bavaria said thats the advantage with low ballast ratios you don't miss the keel if it gets knocked off"

Before anyone labels me as a Bavaria knocker I declare I have an AWB and almost bought a Bavaria once as it was excellent value for money!

Must be why the sea levels are rising, what with all these Bav keels scattered on the ocean's floor!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How on earth can you hit the bottom sooooo hard that you shear off the (stainless steel?) keel bolts, and not realise it????? The noise must have been terriffic!

Must be very interesting to motor it without a keel ,it woudn't go straight ....

Possibly it could: Bavarias have a saildrive that is located a fair distance forward of the rudder. They do not appear to have 'much' rocker in their profile so it could well be that the actual saildrive leg becomes the new pivot point in the absence of a kin keel.

Pure conjecture, of course: I do not have access to the lines.

Doing a quick statistical check (on the forum site) for number of boats with lost keels by make and model.

Bavaria Match 42: 1,765 lost their keels
Other Bavaria: 1
Beneteau: 0
Jeanneau: 0
Westerley: Impossible, they're fully rusted on
HR: Impossible again, hewn in one pice from a single mighty trunk of a GRP tree
Twister: If you lose the keel you lose the boat as it's a sort of keel with a cuddy
"Drum" - 1 (constructed out of hair-gel and mens make-up)

WRONG - the first Westerly Fulmar lost its keel and sank. As an accountant at the company (before it went bust - but thats another story) we queried the layups and had bets on how long the keels would stay on. Needless to say this was one of Ed Dubois early efforts- subsequently the Fulmar became one of the stronegt boats around!

There was also a Centaur that left one keel on the rocks off Old Harry, luckily, being a Westerly they carried a spare keel, /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif but sadly the water came in the big hole left by keel number 1 - and did so on every tide until they refloated it.

Quite an achievement though to lose a keel without apparently flooding the boat!

Anyone tell me which make of sealant they use on the keel bolt heads? Good stuff!

As for those pictures. What is that substance that seems to have shattered? Or are they voids?
