Bavaria 37 Cruiser - Choosing of gennaker? Size?

Hello everyone,

I am looking for the proper gennaker size (and hopefully some brand recommendations) for a Bavaria 37 Cruiser.

I've contacted North Sails and they quoted me for a 75 sq.m. (805 sq.ft.) for this boat, but I talked to a friend - he said that boat would need a 90-120 sq.m. gennaker?

Obviously I'm not experienced with that, and we are NOT going to try using the gennaker without proper supervision - but we need to get the sail first and we shall get a skipper to teach us how to use it, etc.

Thank you in advance!
Stefan

Re: Bavaria 37 Cruiser - Choose of gennaker? Size?

My Bav 37 came with a gennaker made by North Sails. I don't have the size to hand but it works well and seems right for the boat. So they obviously knew what they were doing when they made and supplied it.

Thanks! Obviously North Sails would be a good choice, the only question is the size now /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Is your friend a sailmaker?

When it comes to reccomending sails for types of boat listen to the sailmakers. Especially in the case of quite a common boat like a Bavaria. They've probably made a few!

If you still have doubts, pick up the phone and ring any 3 other sailmakers. Just ask them for exactly what you asked North for. My bet is there won't be much difference in size if at all.

My friend is just a skipper - much more experienced sailor than me obviously, but I was thinking that there's some general formula or ratio for [ boat-size / gennaker-size ] that should be taken into consideration, but it seems like this is not obvious /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Don't forget there's umpteen different ways to measure spinnaker area, none of which agree!

I guess a simple example of what you mean here is if we measure the area of the cloth/material used, or if we measure the projection on a single plain perpendicular to the wind?

Don't know whether this will help (probably just a comparison) but for my Beneteau Oceanis 361 I have a 90sq.m symetric spinnaker.
Supplier is DL sails in Greece.

Bavarias are all fractional rigs so the spin/gen does not haul to the top of the mast. This means the spi will generally be smaller in area than a masthead rig of a similar length boat.

I second the others. North should know but ask other lofts too. I have a 2002 Bav44, Hood Antibes made me a 120m2 assymetric spi with sock when they knew the rig dimensions. It has been fantastic. I bit of a struggle to get down in over 20kt!! I think you would be in for many broaches and find it hard to douse if you go too big.

the Bavaria web site should identify the area and price in the optional extras listings. Also which moodel 37 do you refer as their are several models. This may explain why you get differing sizes.

I second Gypsy's advice. 120m2 on a 37 would be a real handful in anything over 15 kts. We were also supplied with a 120m2 gennaker and sock when we gave the rig dimensions for our Bav 44 to Rolly Tasker sails. A great sail but very hard to gybe or douse without the sock.
