Many thanks for the advice, that sounds like a good place to start, when you say suitable sealant (not silicone...) what would you recommend, bearing in mind it has to seal against that plastic tank?

Fernox LSX seems to work well, available quite readily from plumbers’ merchants, Screwfix etc. I think it actually is a type of silicone but in my experience it stays put a lot better & does what you hope it will.

Ghostlymoron makes a good point about the possibility that the fitting may be tapped into the tank. If that is in fact ptfe that could well be why. You really do need to get a look inside if possible.
