Re: Can anyone give a guide to depreciation?

I have sold 2 production boats at 3 years old, heavy use but very well maintained. Both equated to about 30% depreciation but I had to wait for the right buyer. A quick sale would be more costly in depreciation. I expect it to be just under 20% the 1st year and the 5% per year thereafter. New price inflation comes into play after 3 years, here I believe Bavs are different as they seem to get cheaper each year (headline price) while the Jen, Ben, Elan & dufours increase with inflation!

In my case they were both Dufours but believe all the AWB's, Jen, Ben, Bavs etc are about the same.

Whichever way you look at it they are incredible good value for money.

This of course depends on what you call spec'd out. What I call spec'd out is not what would necc be yours. Below is an example of a 2006 Bav 33.

Depends on your definition of Newish /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The HR 312 was built between 1979 &1993, so newish would be 91/93 and I guess you could buy a reasonable one for £60k, even the older ones with the windows in the topsides will fetch early £50K's

The later 31 Mk1 is going to be more like £65-80k

For 40-50 you will be looking at a nice HR29 or an older Rasmus or Monsun which are very nice boats. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The 312's / 29's are supposedly great boats but when we looked at them we found the accomodation simply too small / awkward for a family of four. Finally we plumped for a '96 Mk1 31 which has a much better layout down below but made for a rather stressful piece of cheque writing! The 29's / 312's were around the 50k mark, the 31's invariably asking over £70k

The 31's are undoubtedly expensive - there's a 1996 example on at Transworld at the moment for £79,950 (I think) - BUT, with tiller steering and the non Scandinavian spec (no heating, no teak deck etc) they do come on the market at quite a lot less - I've seen them for around the £60k mark.

Importantly, unless I'm mistaken, a well cared for HR 31 will sell for more in 5 years time than either a 5 year old Bav 30 or the price you paid for it today.... fingers crossed!

As they say, you pays your money... but whatever you choose I'm sure as NAS said, you'll love her. Have fun.

Only 24 posts so far for a post with the word Bav in it ? Blimey I'm surprised. Of course you've made the right decisiion to suit your particular circumstances and you'll heve many years of pleasure from your boat. Anyway a lot of Sadlers weren't built to exacting standards. How do I know ? I owned one from new that the Roy Rogers Boat Building Company would have been ashamed of. Good luck and enjoy your boat.

I would agree with your view that a HR29 is too small for family of 4, but find it very comfortable for 2 - esp. the 4 berth rather then 5 berth - but that's a seperate discssion!

The chart table and galley on the 31 are seriously lovely, but actually prefer the saloon configuation of the 29, (cushions backing the bulkhead - v.comfortable), which you need to go up to the 34 for.

As you say you set your budget and buy what most fits your requirements. I have to concide, that prior to agreeing to buy the 29 (4 berth), I did think what else I could buy (opportunity cost and all that) and for 24 hrs, a new Bav was considered : /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, stiff drinks were administered and I can now say for certain, for me, I believe I made the right choice, she's lovely to sail - set her up right and she'll sail on her own, manoeuvrable, great for living and relaxing in and what can you say about that big flat teak deck /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All that said, it doesn't stop me visiting the HR webpages and looking wishfully at that new 40 - wow!

Look's like you've spec'd well. I'd agree with adding the battery charger, you won't regret it.

Is the cockpit table fixed or does it fold down? Reason I ask is that I chartered a Ben 331 recently and found the fixed cockpit table a total pain in the ... Anyway, this was my first experience of fixed cockpit table and have read previously that peeps found them useful for bracing etc., can't say this was my experience, apart from the many bruses to my legs (didn't compliment the bikini!), the thing always got in the way when you wanted to do anything quickly.

I looked at this boat at SIBS out of curiousity. I wouldn't have one, but I did think they represent good value for money. I personally think it's a great shame that they gave it wheel steering, the cockpit would be much better without it. I commented on this to the salesman, and he said that the boat was aimed at first-time buyers, and that a wheel is what first-time buyers want these days.
 
As everyone agrees, you have made the right decision, and you will love it.
I also bought an new AWB last year, and there were folk around here suggesting they would not float it on damp grass, let alone go to sea. That led to personal attacks on my decision making process and calls for me to be locked up for the sake of not getting the Lifeboat wet.
Dont listen to them. Work it out for yourself. I would venture to suggest that anyone sailing with a family (who wants to keep them) will be wise with the weather windows, and tales of monstrous waves and sea serpents will not be yours for the telling, which is a good thing broadly. Thats not to say you wont occasionally get caught out in a bit of weather, and you will equip accordingly.
Let me say that for the first few months of ownership, I always felt as if I was getting on someone elses boat, and Lynn & I still smile at each other as we approach the mooring. What a feeling it is to look at your boat, and be minded of the years of saving and struggle to get it.
The headline price and the final price are not in the same county, mine was 72k and 94k finish!
Fortunately, I now have reached page 426 in the chandlery catalogue, and have a five year plan to install all the bits I want, so this years financial strain is lessened considerably.

PS any assumption about new boats being low maint is wrong. You still have to inspect check and replace the same components and systems each year, just pay less on immediate replacements.

Pros and cons of the Bavs will continue to fill this forum for years to come. I went and had a look at the smallest model at the LBS out of curiosity. Very seductive but I would be interested in sailing one..but some very unseaworthy details..I mean the engine access and fold up engine hatch are great, but imagine working on it in a seaway with that hatch suspended over your head?? For my money if I was buying in that range I would have gone for the Hanse 315...a much smarter finish, and somehow felt more of boat.....difficult to qualify but just a gut reaction. Bav know how to sell a boat.. fluffed cushions and a large heads will win the wives over any day!!

As has been proven many times ..... (here we are talking generally - I know there are exceptions ...) Blokes look at the sailing and general layout .... SWMBO's look at beds and comfort ....

Note I didn't include Galley - as most SWMBO's I know are looking to hubby to treat to restaurants etc.

So Fluff up cushions, impress with the lounging capabilities .... spend time on SWMBO's side .... boat sold !!

Porr old Hubby again has to take what suits SWMBO !!!

It's true what small boat champ and leon say about wifes being swayed by beds and heads. It can work to your favour though, swmbo wanted a newish boat, very impressed with the bendytoys, bavs and others of their ilk.

I wanted something a little more traditional. She sniffed, boy did she sniff at a 25yr old down at heel Nauticat we looked at. that is until her vendors, vendor agent and myself stood by the four poster in the master cabin, she went very quiet.

As we discussed the boat later over a coffee she said 'well I like OUR bedroom'. Not very nautical but at that moment i new I'd won and got the boat of my dreams!
 
It\'s true ....

I have my eye on a 60ft Clipper Ship .... she sits in the harbour just down river from me .... Ferroconcrete job - circumnavigated the globe etc.

Has 2 baths and full size "kitchen" ... galley always gives impression of squeezed in area !! Real walk in engine room etc.

SWMBO is not impressed by it .... the aft state-room has a split bed arrangement ... vast cabin, but yes a split bed affair.

She started to appreciate the boat once I mentioned that we would re-arrange so that aft cabin would have a big PROPER double bed ... and we would sort the wardrobes etc. Plus change part of the dark interior to lighte her up .....

You see there are a few things that sell boats to "girls" .... Lounge-ability ..... inside and on deck. Comfort when they've had their bottles of wine ..... spread out sleeping arrangements !!

They do not appreciate the finer points of a snug sea-berth, the control lines led back and cunnighams, tacks and clews etc.

No they want to sit .... nay ..... lounge in comfort and let peeps like you and me play with bits of string.

Well as we all know ... the only way to keep 'em happy is to go bigger - that is boat lads !!!
