I am toying with the idea of changing from a Cobra 850 ( much loved) to a Bavaria 30 (2006) The accommodation will be more comfortable for the wife and the grandchildren will have their own cabin/s. I like a bilge keel as it is very handy for taking the ground and I know I will miss this facility - so useful for the Bristol Channel.
Could any forumites with a Bav.30 share their experiences or thoughts.

Hi Lancelot,
I have owned one of the same vintage for 3 years and loved every minute of it. They are easy to sail and to handle within the marina. The finish, is in my opinion, superior to most of the alternatives in that price range. I have had no problems during my ownership. Friends who have come aboard for the first time are always surprised and impressed by the space and the ease of sailing.
I sail in a fairly wild part of the country and have never felt out of my comfort zone. Although I don't race, I know of a couple of B30s that do and thoroughly enjoy it.

The usual 'gang' of Bavaria bashers on this forum will no doubt jump at this opportunity to get their snide remarks in - disregard them and go with you own judgement.

There's quite a lot to like about the Bavaria 30, but not for the Bristol Channel - you'd be denying yourself the ability to moor easily in Porlock, Lynmouth, Watermouth, Clovelly, as well as lots of really nice places in Pembrokeshire. I'd go hunting for a good bilge-keel Moody or Westerly instead with iron bilge keels.

The only sticking point is the ability to use a drying harbour. I have sailed 36/37 Bavarias in Lanzarote and loved the way they sail. Thanks again.

We've had our Bav 30 from new (2007) and are hugely impressed with the boat. have looked at new HR 30/31 and am at a loss as to what you get for 3/4 times the money!

Excellent value for money, spacious boat.
