Could otherwise be described as a 'House' flag and usaually depicts an association with your boat or boats name or what ever makes your boat float, e.g. if your boat is called Kestrel you may wish to have a picture of a kestrel on your flag. The one shown in your link looks a bit Free Mason Y.C. to me! Usually flown half way up the forestay and the more ostentatious you are the larger it will no doubt be. They are just a bit of colourful fun. Your 'log in' name looks ideal for just such a Battle flag.
BATTLE FLAGS X 275
Cost £7,000 (plus cost of printing and supplying flags) to Building Design
When competitors enter the event each yacht will be supplied with a Battle Flag. This will bear your company name and the Little Britain logo.
I think they are called 'battleflags' because they were originally used by large racing yachts as in-harbour bragging devices. Sponsors, of course, vie to have the biggest and most garish flag in the marina. Many events also issue battleflags to participants to identify members of the fleet. Now even quite modest cruising boats seem to sprout personal or 'house' flags.
The answer to 'How big...' is as big as you like provided it doesn't dangle in the water

Blair's Britain James. The need to make a statement, nothing more.
However, it MAY just BRUSH the water acccording to Admiralty Regs. (My elder son bought our ensign from the Royal flag-makers in the Strand who supplied this info.
