Battery voltage and temperature

How much is voltage affected by temperature? I have just checked my batteries, quietly resting in the basement, and the readings have gone up by several tenths of a volt. Despite today's lovely weather, I'd guess that the ambient temperature has not risen very much. Is it more likely that the multimeter is playing up?

If your multimeter is one of the cheap, usually yellow, ones then it may well be that.

When I tested three together they varied by three quarters of a volt. Even that variation was inconsistent. I then realised that it was time to give up on them.
