I am fitting a separate engine started battery this winter. The engine is a Yanmar 3GM30F. I plan to use a standard low-maintenance flooded battery. What size would people recommend?

My initial thoughts are to go for an 069 (570 CCA) or 071 (420 CCA). Any comments?

Alan.

I have a V*olvo 2003. In common with many of its brothers it takes a lot of churning to get started. I use an ordinary 70 AH car battery and it's never let me down in spite of not having any of the fancy gizmos some will tell you are essential to ensure your batteries will charge.

If you'd like a circuit diagram for a very simple relay based split charger circuit that separates domestic and starting batteries, but doesn't cost an arm and a leg, PM me with an email address.

069...

Of the 2 you mentioned, go for the 069 with its better CCA rating. There's no point paying for a Red Flash unless you especially need a smaller/lighter battery, and are prepared to accept some constraints on charging voltage. An ordinary flooded battery will be fine. Remember that your Yanmar is only a 950cc engine - that's not in any way a derisory comment, just that we all tend to think of boat diesels as "big lumps". A 950cc diesel in a car (if they make them that small) would have quite a small battery!
