Battery powered drill recommendations please

The FFX link reads:
2 x 1.3 Ah Li-Ion batteries (2 607 336 014)

The way I see it you can go two ways; 1) get a high voltage heavy cordless drill with hammer action with a 13mm chuck, or 2) get a very small and very strong 10.8V drill/driver for 98% of the tasks around a boat and a cheap corded 13mm chuck hammer drill for the other 2%.

I used to be in the option 1 camp but after having used a 10.8V mini drill/driver I am not going back. They are so small you can reach the most impossible screws.

Incidentally Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, and AEG all make 10.8V drill/drivers that look almost identical and I bet any of those would be just as good. Don't go for the cheaper lines (like the green Bosch), it is false economy.

If you go for Bosch you can also get another great tool to have on a boat for all those impossible to get to places (Bosch multi tool) which uses the same 10.8V batteries:

small battery drills + hammer are a waste of money ;)

I have three Makitas - which says where my loyalty lies. You don't say what you want it to do. There is a big difference between a light drill which you want to use all day, drive screws etc and a machine to bore holes in walls. (I three cordless and two mains drills, all different - and they all get used heavily.)

My own view is that for seriously hefty work you might as well forget cordless and accept that you need a mains drill. That leaves you free to buy a fairly lightweight cordless which is so much more comfortable to use.

Whatever you do, keep the batteries warm (household temp). Whether cheap or expensive, it'll make the batteries last for many more years!
Really? I think I read that NiMH batteries should be stored 30% charged in the fridge for longest life. Also both current my computer manual and the previous one (lithium ion batteries) explicitly say cool is best.

Lead acid batteries have a slightly improved life at cooler temperatures but a higher capacity if warmer I believe.

I need to buy a new battery powered drill, mostly for use at home. I'm prepared to pay for a good quality product with 2 lithium ion batteries etc.

Can forum members recommend particular makes and models please? What about useful attachments?

Hi,
i have bought loads in the last 3 years for work.
The Lithium ion is the way forward, lighter, shorter charge(usually), no memory, but the go flat without warning(running slow etc) which i've found out mid way through a job.
We went from Makita 19 volts to Hitachi 18 v, you can pick them up from around £100 from screwfix or b&q.
but i recently i bought a Dewalt 10.8 v drill, and its superb, plenty of power and super light weight.
my dewalt was part of a twin pack that came with an impact drill for £170

I have 3 Nicad Makitas I use at work (bespoke furniture) but the drill I use most by far is only 7.2 volts Li - small, light, surprisingly powerful and very well made. Battery lasts ages. Gets into any nook or cranny - great for boat maintenance. Built-in work light. Angle drive comes with it and a keyless chuck as its hex drive. 2 speed gearbox. 2 batteries and 1hr charger. All in a quality plastic case.

I agree with others - it's horses for courses. I find even a smallish 12v Makita ungainly for a lot of work. Have a look it's great! (No affiliation etc..)
