Battery not charging - stator or regulator culprit?

I have. 2005 mariner (Mercury) 30hp 3 cylinder 4 Stoke efi. Normally my gauge shows around 13.5 - 14+ volts charge going to the battery when running. Now shows 11-12volts irrespective of revs. My google skills come up with rectifier/regulator or stator as likely issue. I have dismounted the regulator, and the are no signs of burn out - looks like new. How to check with a multimeter? YouTube has very few decent how to’s on this. Ps, my electrical skills are at a level which make my golf look proficient (which means p*ss poor)

Alternators (at least the ones I know) are 3 phase. It could be a phase gone down which my first guess would be a diode in the rectifier.

Its not an alternator as such its a charging coil which produces AC and increasing voltage with rpm. The regulator levels it off at 14.5v and converts it to DC. In my experience I have replaced many more regulators than charge coils. You can easily check with an ohm meter if the coil is ok, there should be no open circuit or short to ground( engine block). I can’t recall the wiring colours offhand but they split at the regulator and go up to the coil under the flywheel, yellow wires springs to mind .
