Battery life with tiller pilots

I think youll find the TP10 does have aouto tack, or at least mine does

[/ QUOTE ] I stand corrected on that then. The spec I found on-lintedefinitly said it did not but i have been unable to find a Simrad website. What i found was on a chandlers site so could be wrong or out of date. If it does then Yoty can save himself £60 by buying the TP 10 instead of the ST 1000

Tim Davis from Simrad customer support confirms that the TP10 does have autotack and points to page 7 of the manual where it's function is fully described. (see my last post for the link to the manual)

even my old AH800 of yesteryear has it

[/ QUOTE ] Oh you have one of the more modern ones then! My AH1000 does not.

Seriously though the first one in the Simrad range the TP 10 does not have an Autotack function but it is £60 cheaper than the ST1000.

The next one in the Simrad range the TP 22 does have Autotack but costs more than the ST1000.

So the conclusion is that if Autotack is required then there is no choice, it has to be the ST1000

I have both an AH800 and an AH1000 .... all pre-LCD display jobs ... and both have auto-tack ..... here's my AH1000 at work ....

If its same as that - all you do is press the 1 and 10 deg. buttons at same time for which way you want to go .... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I find the auto tack function very useful when I am single handed: I find by the time I have sheeted the jib home holding the tiller over with my backside I often go too far round and lose ground particularely if I am flying the big Genny. Autotack ensures the boat comes onto approximately the right course while I get everything settled down. I can then fine tune the autohelm to the best angle to the wind.

I need to back my genny when tacking ... so using the AT function is very useful for me when sailing on my own ... and swmbo's getting the beer / tea / sarnies etc.

[/ QUOTE ] Like I said, one of the modern ones. This is what mine looks like, an AH1000 from yesteryear which definitely does not have Autotack. There was no such thing as an AH800 when I bought mine and the only choce was that or a Seafarer Mini Seacourse.

I liked those - the dial principle very simple and easy to work with ... I'm a greta believer in - if it works - leave alone !!

Out of interest - with the dial one as you have ... changing course say 100 deg. - as my autotack does - does it do it cleanly or do you get a lot of swinging either side of desired course till it settles ? I know my Autotack has damping to reduce that and I would assume that even your machine would have damping of some description ?

The only complaint I have with my AH1000 - is that it needs a special converter box to have NMEA connected (Accepts pulses not code) .... and the AH800 is unable to communicate with anything other than a windvane or remote pad. So stuck with non plotter controlled .... till I can find one at a Jumble sale or why ...
