Battery decisions

We lost our batteries last month, not holding charge overnight. We originally had Rolls AGM for the domestic bank (880Ah). We have now gone for Victron Gel, same size. It will be interesting to see how they do but I’m interested in people’s opinions.

You will no doubt receive innumerable opinions. There is no perfect answer, it depends what you want to spend and how you use the batteries. My own view is that the cost of AGMs is such that to be economically justified they need to last three times as long as open cell lead acid types. In my case, where the batteries are cycled daily for six months of the year, between maybe 12.4 volts and fully charged, I cannot see this happening. My relatively cheap batteries have lasted anything between three and seven years, because the unforseen happens sometimes and batteries are destroyed for a variety of reasons.

You keep saying this, but it's nonsense, as i keep telling you. Calcium batteries have been around, in common use, for decades. They are totally irrelevant to this thread.

Paul - you are wasting your time. He is totally impervious to any suggestion that he might be wrong or out of date - as he is on many things!

We have not heard from him about generating electricity by mixing fresh water and sea water lately

I'm with Vyv here. Tried all options over the last 20 years. Now I use good old lead acid batteries that i top up with water every 6 or so months. Last between 3 and 4 years then replace. 2 sets of Agm both lasted 4 years...

Me too , good old cheap lead acid batteries ,around 110 euros a touch , last three or four year then throw them away and replace them .

I have no opinion on gel vs. AGM vs. standard leisure, but from reading your blog post, it seems you are reinstalling another Marinco twist 'n lock power intake, after the previous one melted?
