Hi all, new poster after some advice please, I have six x 110hr batterys fed from a MASTERVOLT charger ,in the past winters i have left shorepower on to run dehumidifiers and heaters but have allways left battery charger turned off ,most likely a hang up to not fry batterys on old chargers, but have been told to leave charger on continually , can any one advise which is best and why, thanks

Tony

I leave my 'Newmar' charger on - without any issues. I assume your Mastervolt charger is similar and cuts out as necessary to maintain the batteries.
.

I have a mastervolt charger and leave it on most of the time , I believe they are designed to be left on all the time .

I disconnect my charger when I am away from my boat. I had a "thermal incident" with a battery in the summer, when one battery failed, and the temperature started to run away. This would have exploded if I had not disconnected my charger.

Yes it does . If you turn it off then back on it will start with a bulk charge then gradually reduce down to a trickle charge as the batteries reach their fully charged voltage . The chargers for our forklift trucks at work do exactly the same .

+1 I used to keep mine on all the time but having had the same issue as Rafiki 2 yrs ago I disconnect the charger if away from the boat in longer periods. Thing is you do not know when one of the batteries decide its time to go.

Thanks for your reply's. I must admit I'm still unsure what to do for the best. I am also worried about a battery failing and over heating as only 1 battery has a temperature sensor to the mastervolt. does anyone know whether the charger will sense a failed battery and shut its self down or will it continue pumping full charge into them all?

I used to leave oem 'christec' battery charger on all times (boat is always on shore power), but the start and house batteries both required regular topping up every 4-6 weeks. This seemed excessive, as the two additional Trojan house batteries connected to Victron charger don't much water at all (not oem installed).

I now leave the Cristec switched off but leave Victron on. When I arrive for weekend on boat I switch on Christec to fully charge start and house batteries over the weekend. I made the change to charging three months ago and haven't had to top up since.
