My ancient Constavolt charger system, which can support 40 amps demand has finally died.

I think a 20 amp demand charger would be ok, with clever charging intelligence - the old Constavolt charger did not have this, so the battery charging will also be more effective.

Any one have any experience of these. I have looked at the Sterling one priced around £180.

I've recently fitted a Sterling 20 Amp charger but a bit early to say how well it works save that it charges the batteries and I can keep the cabin lights on all the time!

I noticed that the 20 amp version is currently a bit cheaper from Aladdins Cave at £159.99.

Read previous - re getting it cheaper.

I have just fitted the same unit. Reasonably easy - BUT make sure all the outputs are connected as per the instructions. i.e. if you only have two batteries make sure output three is wired to output 2.

I contacted Sterling on the phone and they were helpful. What I wanted to know was if the unit mains earth was in any bonded to the the negative. If you have your negative bonded to the earth mains supply in any way - you need to get a galvanic isolator - but if they are separate - you don't.

(See earlier postings re-galvanic isolators).

But if you are going to use lots of mains gear - via your shore supply - you would still be well advised to fit a galvanic isolator.
