Looking at battery chargers for the boat in case a fault I have proves to require a new charger.

Like many others my boat requires a charger with three outputs . (i)Starter , (ii)Domestic, (iii)Bow thruster
I do not use a inverter and have one fridge and a small 12Volt TV . I prefer to leave the charger on while we are not on board so the charger is maintaining the batteries rather than needing to charge run down batteries quickly.

Would the following do the job ?

Or do I need something more powerful?

I see the existing charger is rated at 40Amps but I am not sure why such a high power would be needed . However I am open to advice.

I did a similar upgrade last year. I removed one of those Newmar lumps and replaced it with a Victron IP43 50A 3 outlet. Link below.
It’s a great bit of kit and recharges the batteries really quickly. My Newmar was rated at 70A but it never seemed to charge the batteries fully. I went for a this particular unit because it go good ratings and it was the latest tech. I have 2x170ah Victron AGM batteries.

How many ampere hours are your batteries?
The starter battery is 110Ah
Bow truster 60Ah
Domestics 260Ah
However when we return to the marina the starter and bow thruster batteries should e fully or almost fully charged and the domestics don't normally need much charging to be fully charged .

I have a similar capacity in total and went for a 30amp charger. Some people thought that was underpowered as it replaced a 50amp one IIRC.

based on your ah you would need a 30ah charger, personally I would not fit a victron charger seen too many faulty ones returned. I have had good service out of Sterling chargers and have just replaced my waeco 45ah with a Sterling Pro upc1240 with a 5yr warranty

excellent service and prices

I bought a 50A Sterling Charger to replace the failed one on the SC35.
Main advantage was more intelligent charge profiles as opposed to the "fixed" regimes from simpler chargers.

I bought the Victron one with bluetooth to replace the stock charger on my Sealine S24 and love it. The bluetooth function is particularly good. The old charger is also an excellent source of Stainless for various little jobs

I bought a Victron. I've not heard not reliability issues and I know @BartW of this parish buys lots of their stuff for his business.

I think you have a double negative in there somewhere..... The only issue I had was deciding which victron to buy...... In modern speak I think they are well Dope :)

I replaced our charger a couple of months ago and went with a Sterling 40A - as a Sealine Forum member you can get discount from MDS.
Thank you . I have the prices - just need to make a decision.

Is the Sterling quiet when running ?

I also just bought a Victron, my Mastervolt died and I was quoted a minimum of 10 weeks and probably much longer to get a replacement from the States as there are none in Europe! My new Victron is the Skylla 24/80 and so far seems good, although it is only two weeks old. The Mastervolt was going to be £1,900 and the Victron was only £1,200 so saved a bit too.

Yes. The fan speed varies depending upon output but even at full chat I wouldn’t describe it as noisy- ours is in the engine bay under thee saloon and it isn’t noticeable. I got the remote panel so that the charger itself could be tucked away and I can still check what it is doing.

If you are trying to sleep in the Engine Room, you might be kept awake if the batteries are badly discharged.
But under normal circumstances I can't hear mine unless I lift the hatch and climb inside ... the fan on lower outputs is quiet.
This is another reason to go for a slightly larger capacity charger than the bare minimum.

The Victron claims to be silent when in night mode and can be controlled/monitored via Bluetooth and appears to be half the size of the Sterling.

In my boat the charger is in the lazarette which is in the middle of the boat . The fan on the Newmar was just audible from the front cabin on a quiet night.
