we are going to install a new electric anchor windlass 1000w, distance from battery to windlass about 6mtr, battaries are 95 amp, what dia and constrution cable would we require re andy.

Have a look at the anchor winch thread I posted on Scuttlebutt a couple of weeks back - it will almost certainly tell you that you need a bigger battery for starters - (150 ah recommended by lofrans)

Aw c'mon Oz - the electrics will be different in the northern hemisphere surely - even the water goes down the plug a different way.

Have a look in the PBO index of articles. They have covered power windlasses as a DIY project a couple of times.

Cable size...
Your minimum size would be 25 sq mm cable, which would create a voltage drop of about 1 volt (the maximum you could tolerate). Better choice would be 30 or 35 sq mm cable. Use multi-strand copper, tinned if you can get it.
Be sure to fit a fuse or breaker at the battery end of the cable!

I have just looked at the site you recommended and its full of good info about boat electrics. The search facility answered all my questions about winterising different battery types.
There appear to be lots of other articles about 12 volts answering question I didnt even know I had !

i used 35mm welding cable from the local engineering sundries store. it has worked ok for me - no signs of heating up under usebut the pukka stuff would be tinned, so i may have problems in a few years time.
i installed a 90 amp trip at the battery end of the circuit. this has tripped out a few times in use.
battery size is not too important if (like most people) you use the windlass when the engine is running
re-inforce the mounting area well, and take precautions to protect the area between the bow roller and the windlass against chain lash.

I have also used cable from a heavy duty Arc welder on my boat, but mine
was tinned, nice stuff to use very flexable and lie's flat on it's own
accord,

We send you over there in the first place because of your behaviour, to that lovely sunny place, then all you do is sit around in the sun all day practicing cricket and then give us a good stuffing when we come over to see how you are.

Anyway - will the Rugby World Cup see the Southern hemisphere getting stuffed by the north or were the recent results the result of your guys having had a hard season and not sending your best team anyway?
